Title: DNA/Genetics through Protein Synthesis
Description: In this lesson, we will be challenged to find the answers to various questions about DNA and how it is associated with genetics. Questions will be prompted and proctored through Voicethread. This activity will take place through a series of teacher prepared questions related to the basic structure of DNA. From here questions will move to the relationship between DNA and RNA and finally the relationship between DNA and its role in genetics. The outcome of this lesson will be that students will garner a deeper understanding of what DNA is and how it affects them on a microscopic level through a macroscopic level. At the conclusion of the lesson students will be challenged to write an original response to the essential question of "what is genetics and how does it affect me" as viewed through the lens of the DNA molecule. This is a College- and Career-Ready Standards showcase lesson plan.

Title: Wear Your DNA Necklace!
Description: DNA extraction is a necessary and routine step in many biotechnology procedures, such as DNA fingerprinting.  Students will observe the properties of DNA by extracting the molecule from their own cheek cells.  If possible, students should not eat or brush their teeth before this lab. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science University, GEMS-U Project.

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is a molecule that encodes the genetic instructions used in the development and functioning of all known living organisms and many viruses. Most DNA molecules are double-stranded helices, consisting of two long biopolymers made of simpler units called nucleotides—each nucleotide is composed of a nucleobase (guanine, adenine, thymine, and cytosine), recorded using the letters G, A, T, and C, as well as a backbone made of alternating sugars (deoxyribose) and phosphate groups (related to phosphoric acid), with the nucleobases (G, A, T, C) attached to the sugars. Each nucleotide consists of a 5-carbon sugar (deoxyribose), a nitrogen containing base attached to the sugar, and a phosphate group.
