Title: ABCs of Nano
Description: This module provides 6th – 8th grade middle school students with a basic understanding of the Nano. With the knowledge evolution about everything in nano, the various disciplines of nanoscience and nanotechnology have seen enormous growth and the advent of various revolutionary technologies. In this module development with the help of 3D visualization, the important concept and phenomenon such as, how small is “small”, why nano is a magic number, the dramatic increase in surface area thereby exposed atoms by dicing a cube into tons of tiny cubes at nanoscale. In addition to the introduction of the basic concepts of the nanoscience, the module further define the difference among nanoscience, nanotechnology, and nano-engineering.  Nanoscience is the study of material properties and behaviors at the magic nanoscale, which is different from bulk materials.

This module introduces students to the concept of nanotechnology and its application in real world events.  Through a simple experiment  using a nanogold colloid as a biosensor, students compare various concentration levels of electrolytes in sports drinks.

Title: How Catalyst Works in Water Splitting—Improving Performance with Nano-Scale Structures
Description: In this lesson, we chose water splitting to demonstrate how a catalyst works. With the assistance of a catalyst, water molecules can be quickly split into hydrogen and oxygen molecules using electrolysis. Platinum (Pt) is an excellent catalyst for hydrogen and oxygen generation from a water splitting reaction. Platinum is also a chemically stable electrode to prevent corrosion under harsh conditions. In this lesson, electrocatalytic activities of Pt in water splitting reaction are clearly demonstrated by comparing reaction rate between simple stainless steel wires and Pt wires as metal electrodes. The surface area is important for a catalyst to speed up chemical reactions. By roughing the surface of Pt wires, the rate of splitting water can be further enhanced because of increased surface area.

Title: Mad Scientist Jam Too!  
Description: This activity will serve as an interactive culminating activity for surface area. Specifically, the students will get an opportunity to create a rap, song, or chant utilizing information they have learned and discussed about surface area. Students may use notes or other information approved by the teacher on surface area. Teachers may allow students to incorporate instrumental music to enhance the activity. All performances will be videotaped. This activity was created for a module entitled Exploring the Surface Area with the Mad Scientist (TU Math & Science Partnership Project).

Title: Mr. Alka-Seltzer Plus
Description: The rate at which a chemical reaction will proceed is directly related to the amount of surface area of the reactants present. Changing the amount of surface area of one of the reactants present will change the amount of time it takes for the reaction to occur. When too much acid builds in your stomach, it will tend to feel upset. Medicine such as, Alka-Seltzer, has been developed to relieve your upset stomach. This experiment will explore the rate at which an Alka-Seltzer tablet will cure an upset stomach based on the amount of surface area each tablet possess.

Title: The Balloon Inflator
Description: This experiment is designed to demonstrate the effect that surface area has on a gas releasing chemical reaction. In this experiment, carbon dioxide gas is released when vinegar (an acid) is mixed with baking soda (a base). Depending on the amount of surface area of the baking soda available to react, one chemical reaction will release gas faster than the other. This activity was created for a module entitled Exploring the Surface Area with the Mad Scientist (TU Math & Science Partnership Project).

Title: What burns when a candle burns? An Introduction to Using the Scientific Method
Description: In this hands-on lesson, the class is divided into small groups and required to use the scientific method to discover what burns in a candle and why. The steps reinforce this methodical approach to solving what initially appears to be a simple question. In this exercise, students will use the scientific method to discover the purpose of a candle's wick and how radiation allows candle wax to change from solid to liquid to gas, thus allowing the wicking action necessary for combustion to occur.

Description: The purpose of this Science NetLinks lesson is to help students understand that particle movement changes as a substance changes from one phase to another. Before this lesson, students should have been introduced to the notion that matter may go through different phase changes. Title: Liquid Density and Oil Spills     
Description: In this lesson, from Xpeditions, students conduct a simple experiment demonstrating the variable densities of corn syrup, water, glycerin, and vegetable oil. Students then transfer this concept to an examination of cleanup methods used in the Exxon Valdez oil spill. They conclude by writing paragraphs hypothesizing what would happen during an oil spill if oil and water were the same density and therefore mixed together easily.
