Subject: Science (9 - 12)
Title: Pass It Down
Description: This lesson, Pass It Down, integrates science and math into two consecutive hands-on genetics activities that should be embedded within an existing genetics unit suitable for biology students. The results of each activity will be inherently unique, since data generated will be based on genetic traits of students. First, frequency of our class’s facial traits, such as ear lobe attachment, will be calculated. Second, the ability to taste various chemicals, such as PTC, will be tested. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science University, GEMS-U Project.

They will choose one and design a pamphlet which outlines background information about the disorder, symptoms of the disorder, state whether or not the disorder is hereditary, discuss possible treatments (if any), and the patient’s prognosis. Each group will present their disease/disorder to the class.
