Title: Types of Chemical Reactions and Predicting Products
Description: The guided inquiry activity enables students to identify the five basic types of reactions - synthesis or composition, decomposition, combustion, single replacement and double replacement.  Students will also begin to predict the products for each of these types of reactions. The activity was developed in cooperation with Michelle Holdbrooks of Thompson High School. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science University, GEMS-U Project.

Title: S'mores - Limiting & Excess Reactants (Reagents)
Description: Students will use manipulatives that represent the ingredients for S'mores (graham crackers, marshmallows, chocolate bar) to determine the limiting and excess reactants (reagents) for making S'mores. The students will extend this to preparing hot dogs for guests at a party and then relate the concept to an actual chemical reaction.This lesson is modified from a lesson by Rick Moog (POGIL project) and in cooperation with Michelle Holdbrooks at Thompson High School.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science University, GEMS-U Project.

Title: Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall
Description: This lesson covers chiral molecules, which are important in carbohydrate and protein chemistry. Understanding the difference in their structures helps with understanding the different biochemical properties of molecules with similar structures. In this lesson, students will be introduced to chirality through a teacher-led multimedia presentation and demonstrations. In cooperative groups, students will then study the concepts in more depth, building molecular models and producing their own slide shows for the class. Different groups within each class will cover different aspects of chirality, with the whole class completing a presentation of the material in the unit.
