This module is part of the National Institutes of Health Snapshots series, which focuses on a single area of biomedical research to help students understand how science, people, ethics, and history all fit together. Each Snapshot includes a classroom activity to help students understand the scientific concepts, a short summary of the issue, and diagrams that can be turned into overheads. The module for this lesson is about the DNA microarray, also known as a DNA chip.

Description: In this Xpeditions lesson, one of a multi-part unit on the Genographic Project, students review background information about the basics of DNA and chromosomal structure. They then explore the Genographic Project and the work of lead scientist Dr. Spencer Wells. Using a hands-on simulation activity, they learn how genetic markers are passed from generation to generation and how haplogroups are formed. Finally, they use the Atlas of the Human Journey to track one genetic marker over time.

Description: In this Xpeditions lesson, one of a multi-part unit on the Genographic Project, students examine markers of human migration, uncovered by such fields as archaeology, paleontology, cultural anthropology, linguistics, and history. Students begin by conducting a hands-on study of patterns of genetic markers. They consider ways in which contextual information provides scientists with clues about ancient migratory patterns. An extension activity provides an opportunity for students to investigate the controversy of who first migrated to the Americas and develop hypotheses based on scientific research using a collection of Web sites and the Atlas of the Human Journey.
