Description: Students watch "The Lorax" as an introduction to environmental issues. Students need not have prior knowledge of terms. This lesson follows the learning cycle. Students design a plan to make the Truffula trees sustainable and economically viable.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: Diverse Life forms of the Ocean
Description: This lesson allows students to view and draw conclusions on the importance of life in the ocean. It uses student created movies to explore what is going on, as well as identifying the zones and diverse life associated with the oceans. The teacher will be able to facilitate mult-faceted questions concerning the oceans and all the interactions of life within it.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: Alarming Frogs: The Life and Work of Emerging Explorer Tyrone Hayes     
Description: In this Xpeditions lesson, students learn about the ways National Geographic Emerging Explorer Tyrone Hayes uses a combination of laboratory and field study to learn about changes in frogs appearances as they relate to chemical contamination of water. Students choose to investigate one of three topics on which frog studies are helping to provide information--pesticide use, cancer, or cryopreservation.

Description: This lesson, from Xpeditions, asks students to consider whether artificial reefs are good for marine ecosystems. They conclude by writing paragraphs explaining whether they think a new artificial reef should be created in Florida waters.

Description: This Xpeditions lesson focuses on how the sciences can identify clues about the health of the environment and the ways in which geography can help make connections between human actions and environmental conditions. Students learn about efforts to preserve and restore the Chesapeake Bay's health, and then apply what they have learned about identifying and solving problems to develop a local action plan for preserving or restoring a resource in their own communities.
