Title: Spotting Sounds All Around
Description: This is both a hands-on and technology based lesson where students can apply their knowledge of letter/sound relationships while incorporating the use of classroom technology. This Language Arts activity will allow for the students to work with a partner to find objects in the classroom that begin with the initial sounds of selected letters of the alphabet. The partners will use the classroom digital camera to photograph each of the items. The images will then be downloaded to the classroom computer to create a class Power Point presentation about letter/sound relationships.

Title: Stop, Look, and Find Shapes in Our School and Community!
Description: This is a project-based lesson that provides many hands-on opportunities for students to learn about shapes in their environment. Students are challenged to find shapes in our world using everyday technology. Students review the characteristics of basic shapes such as squares, triangles, circles, etc. They will then learn how to use digital cameras to capture shapes in the environment and will create a digital book of their photos.

Title: The Biography Project: Exploring the Past in 21st Century Ways
Description: Through this project-based lesson, students will do research on and create an oral presentation based on the life of an influential Famous American. Students will utilize various means to glean information, from online databases, various websites, and age-appropriate biographical literature to prepare for the final product: a "Living Wax Museum." Students will determine the most relevant information to write a script presented in the form of an oral presentation. The presentations will also be recorded and published as a podcast for sharing on the teacher's website.

Title: Zagat's Guide to the Columbian Exchange
Description: This is a unit plan designed for a class that meets for approximately 60-96 minutes. It is also recommended that this project be used to conclude a unit that covers European exploration and the Columbian Exchange. Students will work collaboratively with a partner to create an "Old World" or "New World" restaurant menu. Old World restaurants must only serve foods that are made with ingredients that can only be found in "Old World" countries and vice versa. In this Students will be required to give the restaurant a historically referenced name and theme and use desktop publishing software to create their menu. Once menus have been produced, students will then orally present the menu to a panel of judges or their peers.

Description: During this lesson, children "wonder" when interacting with text. Instead of predicting what comes next in the story, students use their imaginations to wonder about what might happen. They create their own wondering multimedia slide about a new text. This is a great way to encourage creativity.

Title: Beanie Baby Habitats Collaborative Project
Description: With the booming market of "Beanie Baby" type stuffed animals being so prominent in students' lives, this project brings that interest into the classroom through the use of research, science, hands-on experiences, and technology. The project includes research of living things and habitats through various resources including textbookss, trade books, encyclopedias, and the Internet. It also includes a hands-on project where students design and create a habitat for a chosen living thing. Students will work collaboratively in the classroom and use communication skills to share information with another classroom using distance learning capabilities throughout the project.

Description: This lesson will be used after a study of Alabama. It will incorporate the theme of vacationing into information learned about state parks in Alabama. Students will make a book about favorite state parks in Alabama and favorite things to do in them.

Description: As part of a unit about the state of Alabama, students spend time collecting information about the state, which they in turn report to a classroom in another state using distance learning equipment. Then the two classroms in different states "battle it out" in a game show about the two states written by the teachers.

Title: Once Upon A Time: Using a Fairy Tale to Teach the Elements of a Story
Description: Students will hear and read different versions of a familiar fairy tale and identify what elements a story must have (character, plot, setting) for the story to be interesting and make sense. Using a Venn diagram, students will then compare the differences and similarities between various versions of the story. Next, students in small groups will create their own versions of the story. Finally, students will also participate in a videoconference, "Fractured Fairy Tales", from the Museum of Television and Radio.

Description: This lesson is a technology-based project. This lesson can be taught as a part of an unit on mammals. Students will research different mammals and identify characteristics of mammals. They will also contrast and compare humans to other types of mammals. They will create a group multimedia presentation identifying mammals, characteristics of mammals, and a picture of the assigned mammal. Students will then use Publisher to design a newsletter to inform family members of our studies on mammals. A web site can be developed to enhance the students’ study of mammal.

Storybird can be used in writing and teaching the students about technology. It can expand the students’ creativity by giving them a chance to create something that is all their own and publish it. This will also get students excited about reading and writing.

Digital Tool Description: A Voicethread is a media tool that allows users to create a media board. The application allows users to add images, text, recordings, and videos. The Voicethreads can also be shared for other users of Voicethread to view and add comments. Students will use Voicethread to design a media board. Students will add pictures of plant structures such as: root, stem, leaves, and flowers. Students will then add pictures of each plant structure along with a description of the structures function. The Voicethread will be used as an assessment of the students understanding of the plants structures functions.

Digital Tool: The Underground Railroad: The Journey
Digital Tool Description: In this interactive tool, students are presented with real life situations that a slave might have faced when attempting to escape on the Underground Railroad. In these situations, students must decide if yes they would or no they wouldn't go forth with the options presented to them. Students are introduced to multiple people who were instrumental in the success of the Underground Railroad, such as Harriet Tubman, Thomas Garrett, Frederick Douglas, and Susan B. Anthony. If followed all the way thorough, students will conclude their journey in Canada as free citizens.
