Title: Clock Fractions
Description:
Students find fractions that represent the rotation of one hand around a clock face. They learn what equivalent fractions are and how to find them. This leads to an understanding of simplifying fractions once students start to add fractions together. Finally, students will use these fractions to add them together to find the total movement around the clock. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project, funded by the Malone Family Foundation.
Standard(s): [MA2015] (5) 12: Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. Use benchmark fractions and number sense of fractions to estimate mentally, and assess the reasonableness of answers. [5NF2]
