Title: Clock Fractions
Description:
Students find fractions that represent the rotation of one hand around a clock face. They learn what equivalent fractions are and how to find them. This leads to an understanding of simplifying fractions once students start to add fractions together. Finally, students will use these fractions to add them together to find the total movement around the clock. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project, funded by the Malone Family Foundation.
Standard(s): [MA2015] (5) 12: Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. Use benchmark fractions and number sense of fractions to estimate mentally, and assess the reasonableness of answers. [5NF2]

Title: Introduction to Spreadsheets
Description:
Students will utilize Excel or other spreadsheet software to create both text and numerical valued columns to produce a Christmas or birthday wish list.
Standard(s): [MA2015] (5) 17: Apply and extend previous understandings of division to divide unit fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit fractions. (Students able to multiply fractions in general can develop strategies to divide fractions in general by reasoning about the relationship between multiplication and division. However, division of a fraction by a fraction is not a requirement at this grade.)

Title: Another Look at Fractions of a Set
Description:
In this lesson, one of a multipart unit from Illuminations, students identify fractions in realworld contexts from a set of items that are not identical. Students develop skills in problemsolving and reasoning as they think about their set and how to create new sets given specific fractional characteristics.
Standard(s): [MA2015] (5) 24: Represent realworld and mathematical problems by graphing points in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane, and interpret coordinate values of points in the context of the situation. [5G2]

Title: Inch by Inch
Description:
In this lesson, one of a multipart unit from Illuminations, students use an actual ruler to represent various fractions as lengths. This lesson builds on work done in a previous lesson with nonstandard measurement as students use a standard instrument to measure a variety of items. Several pieces of literature appropriate for use with this lesson are suggested.
Standard(s): [MA2015] (5) 19: Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (^{1}/_{2}, ^{1}/_{4}, ^{1}/_{8}).
Use operations on fractions for this grade to solve problems involving information presented in line plots. [5MD2]

Title: Classroom Paper
Description:
In this lesson, one of a multipart unit from Illuminations, students investigate data in connection with recyclable materials and develop plans to help the environment. Students gather and graph information about their classroom paper use over a period of several days and then interpret graphical information and use the data as a basis for future planning.

Title: Friendly Fractions part 3
Overview:
This podcast is part of a series on operations with fractions. Designed with the middle school student in mind, it is a refresher on the basics of fractions. The lesson also covers adding and subtracting unlike fractions (unlike denominators). The podcast can be used as a lesson or as a supplement to a lesson. A suggestion would be to stop the lesson as it goes along and allow the students to work problems out themselves. Standard(s):
[MA2015] (7) 9: Solve multistep reallife and mathematical problems posed with positive and negative rational numbers in any form (whole numbers, fractions, and decimals), using tools strategically. Apply properties of operations to calculate with numbers in any form, convert between forms as appropriate, and assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies. [7EE3]

Title: Communicating about Mathematics Using Games: Playing Fraction Tracks
Description:
Mathematical games can foster mathematical communication as students explain and justify their moves to one another. In addition, games can motivate students and engage them in thinking about and applying concepts and skills. This eexample from Illuminations contains an interactive version of a game that can be used in the grades 35 classroom to support students' learning about fractions. eMath Investigations are selected eexamples from the electronic version of the Principles and Standards of School Mathematics (PSSM). The eexamples are part of the electronic version of the PSSM document. Given their interactive nature and focused discussion tied to the PSSM document, the eexamples are natural companions to the iMath investigations.
