Title: Let's Describe! (Adjectives Lesson)
Description: Students will learn what an adjective is and how to categorize adjectives using an interactive sorting game. Students will compete with each other by categorizing adjectives by color, shape, size, and kind. Students will have to read and sort the adjective word cards. The student with no adjective word cards first, wins! Furthermore, students will use magazine photographs to describe nouns and write sentences. Title: A Journey Through the Trees
Description: The teacher will discuss the importance of trees with the students. The teacher will provide photographs of various trees that grow in Russell Cave National Monument and the surrounding North Alabama area. The teacher will discuss significant features of each tree and pertinent ways to identify them. The collection may include: Dogwood, various Oak, Hickory, Pine, Maple, Cedar, Beech, Elm, and Birch trees. The teacher will take a nature walk with the students in order for each child to choose a tree and do a bark rub. The students will compare their art and write a journal entry in order to describe something they learned about their particular tree. This lesson plan is made possible through the ALEX and the U.S. National Park Service Partnership.

Title: Vibrations We Can See, Feel and Hear
Description: This four-part lesson allows students to explore the question of how sounds are made. Using wooden rulers, tongue depressors and tuning forks, students will explore and experience sound. Students will use what they have learned to create instruments. Throughout the unit students will use technology to record their thoughts and observations.

Description: This unit introduces students to a study of life cycles by having them examine the life cycle of a butterfly. The students will observe, record and describe the changes in caterpillars as they become butterflies. The teacher will conclude the unit by having each student prepare a slide about a butterfly he/she has researched for a class slideshow presentation about butterflies.

Overview:
Students in Ms. Roby's first grade class chose an animal to research.  Each student found a book about the animal they chose, read and found interesting facts, and found pictures and videos of the animal.  The students then created a podcast to share with other students.  This student chose to research Arctic Foxes.
