Title: See Me, Hear Me, Understand Me:  Franklin D. Roosevelt's Pearl Harbor Address
Description: The viewing goals for this lesson were for students to use a visual text, Franklin D. Roosevelt's "Day of Infamy" speech (played first without sound), to identify visual cues & understand why he may have chosen to use certain gestures, facial expressions, & body language to communicate his message. I wanted students to view & identify what an effective speaker does when speaking formally. By noticing & analyzing visual cues, I wanted students to infer the purpose of his speech & intended audience. The listening goals for this lesson were for students to listen to FDR's "Day of Infamy" speech (after watching it first with no sound), and discriminate, through his chosen words, the purpose of his speech & point of view. Students were asked to listen to FDR's use of voice & tone to understand his message. In the group conversations that followed, my goal was for students to listen to & consider the perspectives/ideas of others & work together to analyze what they heard that made this a formal speech. The speaking goals for the lesson were for students to react through speaking to the video clip & apply characteristics of FDR's formal speaking to their own formal speaking by considering gestures, facial expressions, body language, voice, tone, & specific vocabulary to communicate purpose & point of view. In segment one, my goal was for students to notice how, through listening/viewing, FDR communicated his message & viewpoint, not simply the topic of his message.

Title: D Day     
Description: Robert Capa (1913 - 1954) documented World War II from the bombing of London to fronts in North Africa, Italy, France, and Germany. He captured this arresting image of American troops landing at Omaha Beach on D-day, June 6, 1944. Capa was one of two magazine war correspondents allowed to join the U.S. troops landing on the shores of Normandy, France, for the D-Day operations, launching the Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied Western Europe. Sailing with the 2000 men transported on the U.S.S. Chase , Capa joined the men of Company E on a barge headed for the section of the beach designated "Easy Red." Dodging bullets and hiding behind pieces of steel, Capa photographed for hours in waist-deep water with several Contax cameras. His hands trembled, and he ruined many rolls of film as he tried to change film amid the dead and wounded of the battle. Capa did make his way to the shore, but soon after found himself jumping aboard a barge to rest and dry off, not realizing the boat was returning to its main ship. Capa didn't get back to shore again until the fighting had ended. Capa's D-Day was sent directly to the offices of LIFE in London for processing. Hurrying to develop the rolls, a technician turned up the heat in the dryers, ruining many of the 72 images taken.

Title: Whatever Happened to Polio?: Activities     
Description: These three activities, including an interactive game called "Got Ramps?'' , an animation illustrating the Lifecycle of the Polio Virus and a downloadable sheet for coloring, are part of the online exhibition entitled "Whatever Happened to Polio?'' , from the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. "Got Ramps?'' illustrates the changes in architectural barriers between 1955 and 2005, before and after the Architectural Barriers Act (1968) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (1990). Playing the part of a wheelchair user, students choose a postcard and make the decisions required to deliver it to the post office. They can then email the virtual postcard to someone that they know. By viewing the animated "Lifecycle of the Polio Virus'' , students will learn how the poliovirus begins the infection process. Students can then use the downloadable illustration to color in the poliovirus lifecycle.

Title: A More Perfect Union: Japanese-Americans and the U.S. Constitution     
Description: A More Perfect Union" focuses on the experiences of Japanese Americans who were placed in internment camps during World War II. In this online exhibition, from the Smithsonian s National Museum of American History, students will explore a period of history when racial prejudice and fear upset the delicate balance between the rights of citizens and the power of the state. The story is told through interactive galleries that combine photographs, objects, oral histories, and first-person accounts. Students will be able to share their responses to what they have learned on a comment board that is included in the exhibition as well as search more than 800 artifacts from the Smithsonian Collection. Also included are links to related activities, Web sites, a bibliography and more resources about this topic.
