  • Literacy and Justice Professional Development - 2011-2012

The Alabama Reading Initiative mission states “We are committed to supporting the development of high-quality instruction that will prepare students with the literacy skills needed to meet or exceed grade-level standards.”  Plan 2020 and the College- and Career-Ready Standards (CCRS) outline the skills that are needed to make a student a “literate individual” and a “prepared graduate.”  It is our job, as literacy specialists, to support our local education agencies as they implement the English Language Arts standards and literacy standards in all content areas K-12. Our K-3 schools have had the opportunity to develop literacy skills with the support of our school and regional coaches.  As we continue to support K-3, we are now able to provide the same support to our 4-12 schools due to the new literacy standards and their high expectations.
Sincerely,
The Alabama Reading Initiative

 Alabama Reading Initiative: Our Mission

We are committed to supporting the development of high-quality instruction that will prepare students with the literacy skills needed to meet or exceed grade-level standards.

In order to accomplish this, the Alabama Reading Initiative (ARI) support for local education agencies (LEAs) currently serves over 900 K-12 schools across the state.  The ARI provides data-driven professional development that is aligned with scientifically based reading research.  Through this professional development, the ARI empowers school leadership teams with the content knowledge, skills, and strategies to be highly effective instructional leaders and practitioners.

The ARI provides professional development and coaching in a manner consistent with the Alabama Professional Development Standards and the Alabama Quality Teaching Standards.
