Helpful Websites for Parents of Elementary School Children

Reading Rockets - Activities and ideas for building your child’s reading skills at home.

 PBS Parents -  This can help parents learn how children become readers and writers by helping them develop by talking, reading, and writing together every day.

 The American Federation of Teachers web site  - This offers pages for parents on building strong partnerships with schools. 

 National Education Association web site - This contains information on parent involvement in literacy and other topics.

Parents as Teachers National Center -  The PTNC suggests ways for parents to interact with their children to develop early literacy.

Fun Websites for Kids

Read Me a Book – This is a site for older beginning readers or ESL, but the phonics lessons would be good for young children, too.   Has daily letters, daily sounds, and books or chapters, all read aloud.  

Starfall – Starfall.com is a beginning reading site.  Short and long vowel sounds, consonants, simple stories are presented in a colorful way.  Free materials are available for the teacher to order.  

Early Literature - Poems, rhymes, raps, fingerplays, and chants to use with young children.    

Book-Pop – Web Enhanced Reading Adventure –  Web enhanced storybooks you can read. Audio books read aloud on the web.
