Raising the Achievement of English Language Learners in the Buffalo Public Schools

http://www.cgcs.org/Pubs/Buffalo_ELL.pdf This report from the Council of the Great City Schools (CGCS) chronicles a 2010 review the organization conducted to examine how the Buffalo (New York) Public Schools are addressing the academic needs of English-language learners (ELLs) and newcomers. In this report CGCS focused its attention to how the district’s instructional systems worked on behalf of English language learners in providing ELLs opportunities to learn and become proficient in English. Analysis of the review yielded both positive findings and areas for improvement. The report concludes with recommendations broken down into a) leadership and strategic direction, b) goals and accountability, c) curriculum and instruction, d) program design and delivery system. One of the appendices includes Seattle’s (Washington) Tiered Coaching Support Systems which was referred to in the report.
