  National Blue Ribbon Schools Program

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools where students perform at very high levels or where significant improvements are being made in students' levels of academic achievement.  In addition to being honored at a ceremony in Washington, DC, where each school receives a plaque and flag signifying their status, these schools serve as models for other schools throughout the nation.  Alabama's National Blue Ribbon Schools are listed below for your convenience.

Winfield Elementary School, Winfield City Schools
Heard Magnet School, Dothan City Schools
Beverlye Magnet School, Dothan City Schools

In 2014, the United States Department of Education is piloting a new process that gives states the flexibility to define state-specific criteria and methodology in nominating schools that meet the National Blue Ribbon Schools general criteria. Under this pilot process, Alabama developed and submitted a state-specific plan to identify and select schools eligible for NBRS recognition. This is timely because many states, including Alabama, are implementing significant changes in academic standards, assessments and accountability metrics and targets. The results of this pilot year will inform the NBRS Program guidance for 2015.

In December, Alabama’s plan was submitted to, reviewed and approved by the United States Department of Education. The application process for nominated schools began in mid-January.  Although schools may inquire, schools are not self-nominated.  Alabama may nominate up to five (5) schools which meets the criteria.  For revised eligibility requirements, click here.
