Title: Platonic Solids Ornaments
Overview/Annotation:
This is a hands-on activity that introduces students to the five Platonic solids. Students will discover the special relationship between faces, vertices, and edges. Students will research the Platonic solids and then construct and decorate Platonic solids ornaments.
Content Standard(s):
MA(9-12) Geometry14. Classify polyhedrons according to their properties, including the number of faces.
Local/National Standards:
Primary Learning Objective(s): Students will identify the five Platonic solids and discuss the special relationship among the faces, vertices, and edges of each.
Additional Learning Objective(s):
Approximate Duration of the Lesson: 91 to 120 Minutes
Materials and Equipment:
Poster board, tape, glue, hot glue, craft decorations
Technology Resources Needed:
Computer with Internet access and Windows Media Player, LCD projector (optional)
Background/Preparation:
Depending on the time of the year, students may create solids that will become part of a mobile instead of ornaments.
Procedures/Activities:
1.)Go to the following link and click on video to introduce Platonic solids and their properties. This can be done in the computer lab or with an LCD projector in the classroom.
(Annenberg/CPB)
This website contains a video that introduces students to Platonic solids, their properties, and nets.

2.)Give each student a worksheet (see attached) to complete as they explore the Platonic solids. This may need to be completed outside of class (see attached).

3.)If a computer lab is available, have students explore the characteristics of the five Platonic solids using the applet on the following website. If using a classroom computer, have students take turns selecting and spinning the solids.
(Studying Polyhedra)
This website provides an applet of the five regular polyhedra for students to explore their characteristics.

4.)This website will further enhance students' understanding of the properties of the Platonic Solids.
(The Five Platonic Solids)
This website describes the five Platonic solids and the relationships between them.

5.)Have students review the five Platonic solids and then select the links at the bottom of the page for templates of to use to make their ornaments. Teacher may want to have these already copied for the students. A rubric is attached and should be given to each student as the project is assigned.
(Intermath)
This website defines platonic solids and provides templates for students to make their own models.

6.)Outside the classroom, students will glue each template onto poster board, cut it out, fold along the dotted lines, and tape together the adjacent faces.

7.)Students will decorate their Platonic solids creatively.

8.)Students will need to include a loop for hanging each ornament. Instruct students to attach their names to the loops of their ornaments.
