Title: Unlocking the Author in You
Overview/Annotation:
This lesson is designed to help students develop a love for writing. Students use the attached presentation to guide them in the writing process. They will navigate a variety of websites to help them learn about writing.
Content Standard(s):
ELA(4) 2. Demonstrate reading vocabulary knowledge, including recognition of a variety of synonyms and antonyms.
ELA(4) 8. Compose descriptive texts using an introductory paragraph, sensory details, vivid language, and a conclusion.
ELA(4) 10. Apply mechanics in writing, including capitalization of business and friendly letter parts and envelope addresses and use of punctuation, including apostrophe with contractions; underlining or italicizing of book titles; and commas to separate items in a series and in a physical address.
TC2(3-5) 2. Use various technology applications, including word processing and multimedia software.
TC2(3-5) 11. Use digital tools to analyze authentic problems.
Local/National Standards:
Primary Learning Objective(s): Students will write and critique a story using the writing process. Students will navigate through a prepared slideshow to learn about the writing process.
Additional Learning Objective(s): Students will work cooperatively in small learning groups.

Materials and Equipment:
Notebooks, red pencils, a variety of childrens' literature, Arthur Writes a Story by Marc Brown
Technology Resources Needed:
Computer with Internet access, The Author in You presentation (see attached), MS PowerPoint software, word processing software
Background/Preparation:
Teacher should be familiar with the attached presentation before allowing students to begin. Save the presentation file to all computers before the lesson begins. Students should have experience working in small cooperative learning groups.
Procedures/Activities:
1.)Begin the lesson by reading a favorite book to the class. Ask students to discuss why they enjoy that book. Then tell students they are going to have an opportunity to author their own book.

2.)Inform students that they will use a slideshow to walk them through the writing process. View the presentation as a class to help students understand the process. Let students ask questions while viewing the presentation.

3.)After all students have had an chance to ask questions, let students begin working through the presentation. Instruct them to complete the tasks in the order they appear on the presentation.

4.)After students have completed all the tasks, ask students to share their final stories with the class.
