Our Summer Vacation

Overview/Annotation:

This lesson will be used after a study of Alabama. It will incorporate the theme of vacationing into information learned about state parks in Alabama. Students will make a book about favorite state parks in Alabama and favorite things to do in them.

Students will demonstrate a knowledge of map symbols. Students will work with the teacher to create a page for a class book featuring a state park of Alabama.

Materials and Equipment:

Alabama state map, map symbol flash cards, Arthur's Family Vacation by Marc Brown, markers, construction paper, small sticky notes

Background/Preparation:
Procedures/Activities:
1.)The teacher will read Arthur's Family Vacation by Marc Brown.

2.)After reading this book, review vacation spots discussed during a social studies unit on the state of Alabama. State parks will be the focus of the discussion.

3.)As a class, view the Alabama State Parks web site, paying special attention to the map symbols used for each park. The teacher can review map symbols by using map symbol flash cards.

5.)Students will work with the teacher to make a book containing favorite spots. Each student will "write" (teacher will assist as needed) a page for the book, naming his/her favorite park and his/her favorite thing to do at a state park. Students will illustrate their pages, drawing appropriate map symbols to correspond with their favorite things to do (swimming, camping, boating, etc.).

6.)When students have completed their book, use a large road map of Alabama to plot together the locations of the favorite state parks. On each spot, place a small sticky note with the appropriate symbol for the favorite activity.
