| Procedures/Activities: |
.)The teacher will read Arthur's Family Vacation by Marc Brown.
.)After reading this book, review vacation spots discussed during a social studies unit on the state of Alabama. State parks will be the focus of the discussion.
.)As a class, view the Alabama State Parks web site, paying special attention to the map symbols used for each park. The teacher can review map symbols by using map symbol flash cards. ( Alabama State Parks)
.)Students will work with the teacher to make a book containing favorite spots. Each student will "write" (teacher will assist as needed) a page for the book, naming his/her favorite park and his/her favorite thing to do at a state park. Students will illustrate their pages, drawing appropriate map symbols to correspond with their favorite things to do (swimming, camping, boating, etc.).
.)When students have completed their book, use a large road map of Alabama to plot together the locations of the favorite state parks. On each spot, place a small sticky note with the appropriate symbol for the favorite activity.
