Materials and Equipment:
Book - DANDELIONS by Eve Bunting Milk carton (1/2 pint glued to a paper plate for each child) Modeling clay (enough to cover milk carton) Real or paper dandelions RESOURCES Bunting, Eve. DANDELIONS. Illustrations by Greg Shed. San Diego: Harcourt Brace and Co., 1995.

Background/Preparation:
The purpose of the lesson is to introduce students to the settlement of the Midwest through a discussion of the illustrations in the book Dandelions by Eve Bunting. Due to the difficulty of the text, the teacher may wish to preview it beforehand and retell the book, sharing the illustrations.
Procedures/Activities:
1.)Engage students in a discussion of pioneers and what it was like to live in the West.

2.)Share illustrations from the book, DANDELIONS, and briefly retell the family's experience while living in the West.

3.)Draw attention to the picture of the sod house (in the book) and explain the term "soddie."

4.)Discuss and compare the types of houses that children live in today with houses found in the West during pioneer days.

5.)Distribute a milk carton and modeling clay to each student.

6.) Demonstrate how to shape the clay and apply it to the milk carton to create a "soddie." (Suggestion: Pinch off small pieces or coil the clay into long strips.)

7.)Have students sprinkle real dandelion petals or small paper dandelions on the roof. (Refer to the last picture in the book.)
