Title:

We Are Family (Analyze Families of Functions)

Overview/Annotation:

Students will be able to analyze and categorize families of functions. This should be a staggered lesson. Once a family of functions is introduced, the graphs can be explored using this lesson. Parent functions for this lesson include square root, absolute value, exponential, and logarithmic.
This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project, funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Content Standard(s):
MA(9-12) Algebra II with Trigonometry
Local/National Standards:
Primary Learning Objective(s):

Students will gain graphing knowledge by translating each parent function. The student will be able to predict the final graph, given the function.

Additional Learning Objective(s):
Approximate Duration of the Lesson: 61 to 90 Minutes
Materials and Equipment:

hand-outs as provided rulers, if necessary

Technology Resources Needed:

computer lab and access to online graphing calculator OR classroom set of graphing calculators

Background/Preparation:

Students should be familiar with the Coordinate Plane and plotting points. Students should be able to graph a function by setting up a table of values and plotting points.

Procedures/Activities:
1.)Show video clip of Sister Sledge.
(YouTube - "We Are Family")
Song clip: "We Are Family" by Sister Sledge

2.)Use free graphing calculator online to analyze families of functions.
(Graphing Calculator)
This online source is a free graphing calculator for students.

3.)Depending on the appropriate section, I have provided a guided notes sheet that can be used as a graded worksheet for students to complete as they use the online calculator.

4.)Once students have completed the worksheet using the graphing calculator, go over the section for overall conclusions. Ask the students to discuss their predictions in each section.

Assessment Strategies:

Worksheet can be used as a graded assignment OR can be used as notes and spot-checked by teacher for completion. NOTE: OVERALL CONCLUSIONS SHOULD BE DISCUSSED AS A CLASS.

Extension:

Students who already know the Primary Learning Objective may choose to explore more advanced functions to determine the effects of changing the parameters. Advanced students can also enhance their learning by helping struggling students.

Remediation:

Students who need more help after the lesson can access the online calculator at home and work through additional problems. Students who need help beforehand can use the online calculator for help with plotting points and graphing lines.
