Geometrica Fights Back! |
| Overview/Annotation: |
This activity is designed to give students practice with the properties of special quadrilaterals (parallelograms, rectangles, rhombuses, squares, trapezoids, and kites). The students are provided with a "murder mystery" sheet with descriptions of each "suspect" and a "line-up" of twelve suspects (different quadrilaterals with their properties). The students must decide which suspect(s) from the line-up meets the description. The "guilty" quadrilateral will be discovered at the end of the activity. |

| Background/Preparation: |
The teacher may choose to teach the properties of quadrilaterals and have students practice applying the properties prior to this lesson. The teacher may choose not to supply the students with the sheet that lists the properties, but instead have the students to complete the activity from their memory of the properties or their class notes. |
| Procedures/Activities: |
Print out the attachments included with this lesson. The teacher may provide a set of twelve quadrilaterals for each student, or he/she may choose to allow the students to complete the activity in groups. To begin the activity, it is fun to play a Horror Sounds CD while a student volunteer reads the story. If this activity is used to summarize a unit on quadrilaterals, the students will be familiar with the properties and have applied them prior to completing this activity. If this lesson is used to introduce the unit before students have become familiar with the properties, the teacher may need to briefly introduce and discuss the properties on the sheet before beginning the activity in order to help students organize their thoughts.

| Assessment Strategies: |
The activity sheet can be collected and graded. If this activity is being used as a review for a unit on quadrilaterals, a unit test can be used to assess knowledge and understanding of the properties. However, a short quiz on the properties during the class meeting after the activity works well. |

The teacher may choose to have the students write their own stories or develop an activity using geometric shapes and properties. |
