Edmodo That!: Interactive Discussion for Monster by Walter Dean Myers.

Overview/Annotation:

In this technology-integrated lesson, students will have several opportunities to collaborate and discuss their individual thoughts and findings after reading the novel Monster by Walter Dean Myers using Edmodo.

This is a College- and Career-Ready Standards showcase lesson plan.

Technology Resources Needed:

Laptop (One for the teacher and one for each student. NOTE: Students may also be placed in pairs to complete the tasks on Edmodo if laptops are limited.)

Background/Preparation:

Teacher:

  • Create an Edmodo Account
  • Have an Edmodo class code
  • Familarize yourself with the Edmodo registration process for students.
  • Read Monster by Walter Dean Myers

Student:

  • Read Monster by Walter Dean Myers
  • Have proir knowledge of plot (setting, inciting incident, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution)
  • Have prior knowledge of irony
  • Have prior knowledge of theme

If your students are new to Edmodo, they will need to create an account. Simply guide your students through this process. If they have already registered, they will simply need to login and join your class using the class code.

Procedures/Activities:
  1. Prior to this lesson, it is imperative that students have prior knowledge of plot, irony, and theme as these topics may come up in the discussions on Edmodo.
  2. As the students enter the classroom, have the following question projected:  As you read Monster, did you have any questions pop into your mind?
  3. After posing this question to students, ask the students to give a THUMBS UP if they did have a question arise. (The majority of the students should have their thumbs up).
  4. Ask the students to look around the room so that they can see that they are not alone. It is a good sign that they have questions, this is a sign that they are active readers.
  5. Inform the students that today they will have an opportunity to pose the questions they had pertaining to the novel with one another and that they will get an opportunity to answer some of their classmates' questions.
  6. Ask each student to log into their laptops.
  7. Once the students have logged in, guide them to Edmodo (www.edmodo.com). Be sure to do this process with your students by using your computer and the digital projector.
  8. Distribute the Edmodo Post Rubric (See Attachment).
  9. Review with students the Edmodo Post Rubric so that they know what you expect them to do and how you will grade them.
  10. At this point, you will need to explicitly teach your students the type of response you would like to see based on the rubrics attached to this lesson. Begin by posing the following question as a NOTE: What lesson do you think Steve learned from his experience? Why?
  11. Allow students to answer this question by replying to your post on Edmodo. Give students five minutes to complete this task.
  12. Once all students have replied to your question, review with students their responses. Be sure to point out responses that were and were not in line with the rubric.
  13. Allow students to revisit the questions they wrote down at the beginning of class. Have each student post their question to the class page. In addition, students will need to respond to THREE of their classmates' responses. Allow students 20 minutes to complete this task.
  14. As students create their post, circulate through the classroom making sure all students are on task and provide assistance when needed.
  15. After all students have completed their post and have responded to their classmates, as a culminating activity, display their responses on the projector and guide a class discussion on what the students posted. This is a great opportunity to clarify any issues you may have as to the quality of their posts.
