Title: Endangered Species: What are they and how can we help them?
Overview/Annotation:
The topic of endangered species is one that needs to be addressed with every student. As more and more plants and animals become extinct, students, as inhabitants of this ecosystem, need to be aware that human actions affect the planet. The purpose of this lesson is to educate students on endangered species and to provide them with basic knowledge of the causes of these tragic extinctions.

TC2(3-5) 8. Collect information from a variety of digital sources.

Primary Learning Objective(s): The students will:
1. Learn that many living things are slowly becoming extinct;
2. Identify species that are labeled “endangered;”
3. State the main reasons why our species are being endangered;
4. Research the Internet for information on endangered species;
5. Prepare a presentation on an endangered species.

Technology Resources Needed:
Computer with Internet access (computer lab desirable but not essential), PowerPoint, Kid Pix, or other presentation and multimedia authoring software
Background/Preparation:
It may be a good idea to define words such as endangered, extinct, habitat, ecosystem, etc. Schedule the school’s computer lab for the main activity.
Procedures/Activities:
1.)Introduction: The lesson will start off with the teacher asking the students to close their eyes and visualize their favorite animal standing in its surroundings. Next, the teacher will tell the students to remove the animal from their image, just showing the surroundings, keeping in mind that they will never see the animal again. This will spark interest. The Presentation section will begin with a PowerPoint slideshow asking the students, “What are endangered species?” The objectives of the lesson should be included in the first part of the slideshow elaborating on what is expected from the students. Next, any and all words that need defining will be introduced quickly into the lesson to provide an accurate interpretation of the material being covered. Finally, background information will be covered. Make sure that the students understand that animals are not the only species that are endangered.

2.)Main Activity: If the students do not have experience in searching the Internet, guided practice will be necessary. Show the students how to use search engines. For the main activity, the students will be broken into small groups. Each group will be assigned one endangered species. For the purpose of keeping the students’ attention, animals may be the only species that are assigned; however, once again, elaborate to the students that a plant can also be labeled endangered. The worksheet (see attachment) needs to be completely filled out. Students will be searching the Internet for the causes of the species endangerment, locations of the species, and any services that are being performed to help the species survive. For time purposes, this part of the lesson can be done in the school’s computer lab if one is available.

This recommended website is an excellent source to show to the students and point them in the right direction for research. It has a map that lists all the endangered species according to each state in the United States.

3.)Closure/Conclusion: Each group will create a presentation slideshow using Kid Pix. If time permits, they can download images of their animal of choice. They will present their findings to their classmates. After each group is finished, ask multiple questions to see if the students understand endangered species. Allow the students to ask any questions that they may have. At this point, a KWL chart may be helpful.

4.)Follow up Lessons/Activities: There are many endangered species (animals) that are living in captivity. One follow-up lesson/activity that would help enrich the lesson is to research one of these animals. For instance, Koko the gorilla, is a great example. The teacher and students could keep a close eye on Koko by visiting her website. Also, older students could view short excerpts from the movie, "Gorillas in the Mist." It is an excellent movie that addresses some of the challenges in maintaining our endangered species. [NOTE: Screen the video carefully. It contains some strong content not appropriate for all ages. It would be a wise precaution to obtain written permission of parents if you decide to show it.]

Assessment Strategies:
Have the students answer the question, in a brief essay, which is also the title of the lesson, “What are endangered species and how can we help them?”. Make sure that they include in their essays the causes of endangerment. Allow the students to draw a picture of their favorite endangered species. The teacher should use a rubric for assessment.
