The book, Charlie the Caterpillar, by Dom Deluise (Simon Schuster), Character Train (character analysis) Think-sheet from the Makes Sense Strategies CD (see attachment) (one handout for each student and a transparency), overhead projector, water-based felt markers

| Background/Preparation: |
Teachers should define and discuss plot, setting, and words that describe a person. |
| Procedures/Activities: |
1.)Teacher will read aloud the book, Charlie the Caterpillar.
2.)Students will retell and discuss the story, making sure to include the beginning, middle, and end of the story.
3.)Students will complete the Character Train Think-sheet (see attachment), listing the title of the book, plot, setting, 3 characters, listing words to describe the characters, and drawing pictures of the characters. (Depending upon the ability of the students, the teacher may need to do this lesson as a group activity, writing the answers to the Think-sheet on a transparency.)
4.)Review the Think-sheets with the class.
5.)If time allows, students could suggest alternative characters, settings, or titles for the story and retell it incorporating the changes.
6.)The teacher may want to enlarge the Think-sheet, laminate it, and reuse as necessary.

| Assessment Strategies: |
The teacher will observe students as they complete the Think-sheet to see if they have described the setting of the story, the plot of the story, and 3 characters of the story and drawn a picture of the characters. If done as a class activity, the teacher will observe student responses to the prompts. |

Science: Study the life cycle of the butterfly. Order caterpillars and watch them turn into butterflies! |
