Common Core Thrusts Librarians Into Leadership Role

Check out Bay Minette Middle School!

Bay Minette Intermediate School students participated in the Alabama Education Association contest, “Be a Champion and Read.”

Students were challenged to read six books on their reading level to qualify for the two grand prizes; Iron Bowl tickets (one winner for each team) and 2 guests.

BMIS teachers Shelly Stewart and Terry White constructed a “Be a Champion and Read Walk of Fame” in a school hallway that inspired and motivated students to read. Pictured are some of the students who met the challenge.

ALA Youth Media Awards - January 28, 2013 at the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Seattle, WA: http://www.ala.org/yma

Each year the American Library Association (ALA) honors books and media for children and teens. Recognized worldwide for the high quality they represent, the ALA Youth Media Awards (YMA), which include the prestigious Newbery, Caldecott, Printz, and Coretta Scott King Book Awards, do guide parents, educators, librarians and others in selecting the best materials for youth. Selected by committees composed of librarians and other literature and media experts, the awards encourage original and creative work in the field of children's and young adult literature and media. The award announcements are made as part of the ALA Midwinter Meeting. Award presentations will be made at the ALA Annual Conference. Contact the ALA Public Information Office with questions about the YMA announcement.

smLNK2LRN

Librarians have the education and skills to lead Alabama schools through the educational landscape of Dr. Tommy Bice’s Plan 2020. In our role as an instructional leader, we link teacher’s, student’s and the entire educational community to resources necessary for success at every level. In recognition of the importance of this link, we are declaring our theme for the year to be LNK2LRN.
