We invited Riverboat John Ferguson to speak to our 6th graders on March 1; he is an excellent singer and storyteller. The students seemed to really enjoy the performance which focused on Mark Twain’s novel, Tom Sawyer. Since our entire school was not able to read Tom Sawyer, we focused on one of his short stories, andMrs. Utsey’s students drew frogs on a large banner that read “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.” She and I used some mosaic art work to create a scene from the novel Tom Sawyer. We have several other displays in the library and a bulletin board in the hallway with a sketch of Mark Twain that Mrs. Utsey drew.
Also, in celebration of Dr. Seuss’s birthday, our Junior Library Club members read Dr. Seuss books to our reading and literature classes.

The Alabama School of Fine Arts kicked off its participation in the Big Read Campaign with cake and pink lemonade. Mark Twain, his books, and life were the focus of the book display in the cafeteria. The whitewashing scene from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was the inspiration for the slogan “Together Individuals Make a Community.” Students made individual pickets for the white picket fence that covered the cafeteria windows. The week ended with frog races reminiscent of one in the Twain short story, “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.”

News of Mark Twain’s death really has been greatly exaggerated! Students at Bay Minette Intermediate School were visited recently by Mr. Twain, aka Mark Manry and Bay Minette Public Library’s children’s librarian, Victoria Barnett.
Mrs. Barnett performed a Reader’s Theatre and Mr. Twain told about his life and times. The visit was part of The Big Read Alabama initiative that is a partnership between the National Endowment for the Arts and the Institute of Museum and Library Services as a means to revitalize the role of literature in American culture. |
