Title: The Empty Pot
Description: This lesson will help students identify the moral of the story The Empty Pot by Demi. During this lesson, students will have an opportunity to discuss and write about the character trait honesty. Students will share about a time when they demonstrated this character trait. This is a College- and Career-Ready Standards showcase lesson plan.

Title: Cell Phones: Immoral, Illegal, or Just Plain Rude?
Description: Cell phones, love them or hate them, most everyone (especially students) think they can't live without one. Lines for usage are blurred for students who have no memory of never having a portable phone to use. This lesson is designed for upper middle and high students to examine ethical, moral and health issues involving cell phone use.

Title: "Reach for the Stars, Not Drugs"
Description: This door decoration provides several learning objectives for middle school students during "Red Ribbon Week." A door is covered with paper, the week's theme is written on the door, and miniature candy is attached with hot glue to "tempt" students.

Title: What Makes a Good or Bad Leader?
Description: After deciding on the criteria of a good leader, students research either a good or bad leader, create a class presentation of that person which focuses on his/her impact on history. Students then write and perform a three to four minute skit to illustrate the leader's impact on American life.

Title: Everyday Heroes
Description: Following a unit on Greek mythology and mythological heroes, students design and maintain a website that features everyday heroes. Students submit candidates based on their everyday encounters with people in the community.

Title: Lou Gehrig and Character Education
Description: After reading book or short story about Lou Gehrig, students conduct online research to learn more about him. Using the material they gather about his life and character, students create a flyer/poster. Students then participate in a virtual field trip from the Baseball Hall of Fame entitled "Lou Gehrig: The Iron Horse."

Title: Career Discovery: Preparing a Resume
Description: As part of a career discovery unit, middle school students examine the need to prepare a resume and the potential consequences of giving false information in a resume. Using an online resume wizard designed for middle schoolers, students prepare their first resume. This lesson can be broken into three smaller 30-minute lessons (Step 1, Steps 2-5, and Steps 6-7).

Title: Rumpelstiltskin by the Grimm Brothers: A Reading and Writing Lesson
Description: This lesson provides literature-based reading and writing activities for special education and early elementary students. Using a simple story, special education/early elementary students develop reading and writing skills and learn about honesty, thoughtfulness, greed, promise-keeping and fairness. A persuasive letter will demonstrate what they have learned.

Title: It's Your Birthday, Dr. Seuss!
Description: This lesson plan is intended to be used during the month of March when the class is preparing to celebrate Dr. Seuss Day. After listening to and reading different stories by Dr. Seuss, the students have opportunities to compare and contrast story elements through critical thinking and Venn diagrams.

Title: A Penny For Your Thoughts
Description: This is an outline for a week-long lesson usually taught in the month of February around President's Day. It is an interdisciplinary study combining coin identification with a literature-based study of the Presidents represented on the coins.

Title: Dr. Seuss on the Loose: And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street
Description: In Dr. Seuss’ first published children’s book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, Marco, inspired by the passing of a horse and wagon, imagines a series of increasingly incredible sights on his way home from school. This story provides a springboard for discussing the concepts of honesty, imagination, and creativity and for exploring the difference between dishonesty and creativity. Students will learn to recognize when it is appropriate to weave an elaborate tale and when it is not.

Title: Learning about Cinquains
Description: After reading/hearing Junie B. First Grader Cheater Pants by Barbara Park and discussing the concept of cheating, following directions, and poetry, students write cinquains and publish a class booklet.

Title: A Hero by Any Other Name. . .
Description: In conjunction with a study of literary or national heroes or in recognition of 9/11 week, students select a hero from among their family and friends, gather information about him/her, and prepare a multimedia presentation of their research.

Title: Computer Lab Rules and Technology Ethics
Description: Middle school students create presentations or newsletters to demonstrate appropriate behavior while using the computer lab, copyright laws concerning the use of Internet images and web sites, and Internet safety.

Title: Character Education - Respect for Self, Property, Others and The Environment
Description: This lesson will be implemented as part of a character education unit on respect for self, property, others and the environment, an essential quality of good character. Students will apply research skills, open-ended discussions, keyboarding skills, digital photography, and cooperative learning experiences to investigate and internalize the meaning of respect. This lesson will also aid students in understanding how respect is viewed in other cultures.

Title: Character Education - Integrity
Description: The purpose of this lesson is to identify some of the skills and attitudes that are essential for solving problems effectively. This lesson will be implemented as part of a character education unit on integrity. The meaning of integrity is investigated and discussed through the use of research skills, open-ended discussions, digital photography, and cooperative learning experiences.

Title: Character Education - "Respect"
Description: This lesson will be implemented as part of a character education unit on integrity. Students will apply research skills, open-ended discussions, and cooperative learning experiences to investigate the meaning of "respect." Practicing good manners means showing respect for yourself, for others, for property, and for the world at large. Many of these basic courtesies are automatically included when the “Golden Rule” (Do unto others as you would have them do unto you) is the rule of thumb. Giving respect to others and having respect for oneself is an integral part of developing good character.

Title: President's Day for Special Education/Early Elementary
Description: This lesson helps special education/early elementary students learn about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln and discuss how each demonstrated the character trait of honesty.

Title: Friendship is Fun!
Description: Students will explore the concept of friendship in order to promote class unity. Some of the areas to be included are characteristics of friends, differences of individuals, and examples of ways to be a good friend. The class will complete several technology-based projects based on friendship. The culminating activity for the unit is an activity involving parents.

Title: Food and the Digestive System      Add Bookmark
Description: This Science NetLinks lesson, the first of a three part series on nutrition, focuses on what nutrients are needed to do particular tasks for the body. More specifically, where the nutrients come from, their different forms, and then their importance for particular tasks in the body. Some of the lesson focuses on the overall digestive system in order to address the fact that undigested food is eliminated.
