Title: Are You Jumping for Joy or Pitching a Fit?
Description: What makes you jump?  When someone scares you?  When you are fuming mad? When you are excited about scoring a goal?  In this lesson, students will explore all the reasons that make us jump.  The students will write a poem about a time they jumped and make a simple collage of themselves jumping.  This is a College- and Career-Ready Standards showcase lesson plan.

Title: Environmental Issues Scrapbook and Podcast
Description: Over the duration of a semester students will collect newspaper and magazine articles related to environmental issues. Students will compose a scrapbook of articles. Students will choose two topics to record and share with the class.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: Estimation Station
Description: During this lesson students will learn the difference between estimation and guessing. Knowing how to estimate is an essential skill that will help students determine approximate totals as well as check the reasonableness of their answer to a problem. After listening to the book Betcha by Stuart J. Murphy, the students will be given opportunities to practice the strategies that are presented. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: Ice Cream Sundae Survey
Description: Students quickly realize the importance of learning how to read and find information in charts, graphs, and tables compared to finding the same information written in a paragraph. This is a fun, high energy lesson!This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: KEEP IT MOVIN'!
Description: This experiment will provide students with an opportunity to see first-hand the effects of friction on moving objects. This hands-on/minds-on activity will engage all learning styles and provide the opportunity to relate to real-world situations.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: "The Lorax"- An Environmental Issue
Description: Students watch "The Lorax" as an introduction to environmental issues. Students need not have prior knowledge of terms. This lesson follows the learning cycle. Students design a plan to make the Truffula trees sustainable and economically viable.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: The Greedy Triangle - Intro to Geometric shapes
Description: Students will learn how to identify different polygons.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project, funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: Ship Shape
Description: Students will create a picture of a pirate ship using plane shapes they have traced from three dimensional shapes. The students will then create a story to go along with their picture.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: Me in a Box
Description: During this lesson students develop a sense of self awareness and appreciation for their own individuality and uniqueness. Students use graphic organizers to identify personality traits and collect items and pictures that represent the traits. The class has fun trying to identify to whom each box belongs before they are presented.

Title: Everyday Heroes
Description: Following a unit on Greek mythology and mythological heroes, students design and maintain a website that features everyday heroes. Students submit candidates based on their everyday encounters with people in the community.

Title: This Business Called Learning: Advertising
Description: After analyzing the techniques of propaganda in commercial advertising, students work in cooperative "business" groups to create an advertising campaign for a new product called Giggle Gum. Campaigns include a press release, slideshow presentation, print ad, and radio commercial.

Title: Dr. Seuss on the Loose: And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street
Description: In Dr. Seuss’ first published children’s book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, Marco, inspired by the passing of a horse and wagon, imagines a series of increasingly incredible sights on his way home from school. This story provides a springboard for discussing the concepts of honesty, imagination, and creativity and for exploring the difference between dishonesty and creativity. Students will learn to recognize when it is appropriate to weave an elaborate tale and when it is not.

Title: Riddles in the Dark
Description: Riddles can be challenging to solve and even more challenging to write. After reading the riddles used by Gollum to try to ensnare Bilbo in chapter five of Tolkien's The Hobbit and those used by Bilbo to outwit Gollum, students use their wit and cunning to author a riddle pop-up book.

Title: Thinking Hobbit
Description: This is an introductory lesson designed to stimulate student interest in reading The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. The lesson familiarizes students with the physical traits and social codes used to guide hobbit behavior, and then looks at the Plus, Minus, and Interesting ideas (PMI), as well as the influencing factors, that might shape a hobbit's thoughts when faced with the prospect of going on an adventure.

Title: The Diary of Anne Frank: How Would I Survive?
Description: After reading the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, The Diary of Anne Frank, by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, student groups examine the coping strategies of the people in the Secret Annex. Then, each student develops a personal survival plan to be included in a group slideshow presentation which addresses this question: How would I survive if I experienced the same stressful situation? Additionally, the students discuss current world situations that necessitate coping strategies.

Title: How to Set the Table Correctly
Description: The Family and Consumer Science (FACS) portion of this lesson provides opportunities for students to utilize acceptable guidelines for table setting. A basic computer research component familiarizes students with fundamental processes of online investigation. Students will then work in groups to create slideshow presentations to teach other students how to correctly set a table.
