Title: Music: A Vehicle for Wartime Protest
Description: Students will examine the significance of music as a medium for wartime protest. They will demonstrate their skills at interpreting primary source material to identify the artist's objections to war and investigate the historical context in which protest songs were written. Finally, students will choose their own wartime protest song to analyze and present to the class.  


Subject: Social Studies (10 - 11)
Title: History: It's All Around Me
Description: Most students are unaware of the historical significances that can be found in their immediate surroundings. This lesson plan sends students on a quest to seek out areas of historical significance that can be found within their local area. Once students find these hidden historical gems they will report their findings via photo story. This lesson plan has been made with Alabama historical places of reference in mind; you will need to adapt it for your own individual state.

Title: The Roaring Twenties
Description: This activity involves comparing turn of the century music with the music from the Jazz Age. Students will listen to musical selections and analyze how the change in the music reflects the change in cultural attitudes. They will also work in groups to create their own radio shows.

Description: Students view Eleanor Roosevelt's resignation letter to the DAR in response to Andersen being denied permission to sing. Students write a letter to a newspaper editor about social injustice.

Finally, using similar poetic concepts and techniques, students have an opportunity create a poem from material in their own experience.

Students read the novel, research Hurston's own life and ethnography, listen to her WPA recordings of folksongs and folktales, and compare transcribed folk narrative texts with the novel itself.
