Title: Sojourner Truth Keynote Presentations
Description: This lesson provides students with a hands-on experience in planning and creating a Keynote presentation, utilizing iPads, with their peers focusing on Sojourner Truth. (Note: Keynote is an Apple presentation app, similar to PowerPoint, which allows students to create stunning presentations complete with charts, transitions, graphs, animations and designs.)


Subject: Social Studies (12), or Technology Education (9 - 12)
Title: So You Want to Be President? Let's Elect a President:  A Classroom Election Wiki Project
Description: This project-based learning project extends classroom learning with a variety of multimedia tools to conduct an engaging election campaign for the Presidency. Students form political parties, write a platform, and conduct a campaign for the Presidency. Party platforms are presented to the class and embedded on a election wiki where each party has its own campaign page for their candidate. Parties use a variety of web tools to conduct the multimedia online campaign and create their candidate's web page. The project concludes with the election of one of the candidates.    


Subject: Social Studies (9 - 11)
Title: Three Principles of Civil Disobedience: Thoreau, Gandhi, and King
Description: Both Mahatmas Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. were influenced by Henry David Thoreau's essay, "Civil Disobedience." Have students research and read, using the Internet, the first part of Thoreau's essay. Then have students write an essay analyzing how Thoreau's writing influenced Gandhi and King. Have them include in their essay the following:1. What is the focal point of "Civil Disobedience?"2. Did Gandhi and King agree with everything in Thoreau's essay?3. How did Thoreau's philosophies influence Gandhi and King?4. How did Gandhi influence King? This lesson was created to accompany the Alabama African American History Calendar Project.


Subject: Social Studies (K - 11)
Title: African American Honorees in Alabama History
Description: Students will create a PowerPoint slide show presentation and brochure on a famous African American icon from the Alabama Calendar. Students may select famous African Americans from Alabama such as Rosa Parks, Vonetta Flowers, Dr. Mae Jemison, Joe Louis, Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, Rosa Parks, Hank Aaron, Dr. Regina Benjamin, Dr. Ethel Hall, Judge Oscar Adams, Billie Jean Young, George Washington Carver, Booker T. Washington, or Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This lesson was created to accompany the Alabama African American History Calendar Project.


Subject: Social Studies (7 - 12), or Technology Education (9 - 12)
Title: Let's Vote! What Do You Need to Know to Vote In Alabama?
Description: Registering to vote, gathering information about the candidates, and casting a vote at the polls are vital parts of the process of selecting elected officials. Students will understand how the registration process works and how to cast their votes in Alabama, thus fulfilling their responsibilities as citizens in the electorate.


Subject: Social Studies (7 - 12), or Technology Education (9 - 12)
Title: Why Vote?
Description: Students will complete a web quest that includes reading material on the expansion of voting rights, viewing video on historical events related to suffrage, and completing a multimedia project (public service announcement). An extension poster project is included.

Title: Xpedition Hall      Add Bookmark
Description: Built around the National Geography Standards, Xpedition Hall is a virtual museum that is filled with interactive exhibits designed to provoke reflection on how human beings shape and are shaped by the world in which we live. The Hall contains one exhibit for each of standard, and groups these exhibits into six galleries, which correspond to the standards six underlying '' elements.'' Students use can use an image or map of the Hall to navigate through the exhibits.

Title: The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution gave women the right to vote in 1920.      Add Bookmark
Description: A representative from the local chapter of the League of Women Voters is invited to talk to students about voting rights and what they can do to be active in politics.
