Title: The Earth has Many Layers
Description: This is a hands-on lesson that will help students explore what geologists do to study the different layers of the Earth. Students will work in cooperative groups to complete this activity. Students will also keep a Science Journal telling about their findings. This lesson will follow the Learning Cycle.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: The Rockin' Rock Cycle: Metamorphic Rocks
Description: The rock cycle consists of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. This lesson will focus on metamorphic rocks and how they form.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: The Rockin' Rock Cycle-Igneous Rocks
Description: In this lesson, students will be given a brief overview of the rock cycle. Students will then focus on igneous rocks and how they are formed. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: The Birth of Rock(s) - Identifying Rock Types
Description: This lesson will allow the student to explore the characteristics of rocks. Through exploration the student will be able to identity the three kinds of rocks and examples of each. They will also learn how rocks are used in our society.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.


Subject: Information Literacy (K - 12), or Science (3), or Technology Education (3 - 5)
Title: Baseball Rocks!
Description: Through videoconferencing, two classes battle out their knowledge of rocks and minerals and the rock cycle by playing baseball. Each class completes a unit on rocks, minerals, and the rock cycle which includes gathering facts from print and non-print resources, classroom activities, and experiments. Each class then creates PowerPoint slides with questions (and answers) to pitch to the opposing team. The teams meet on the videoconference playing field to determine which class is the champion of rocks! The virtual baseball game serves as the culminating activity of a unit on rocks.

Title: Rocks and Minerals
Description: Students will research a rock or mineral to find out some of its properties and uses. Each student will then complete a slide presentation to present findings.


Subject: Science (3 - 5)
Title: Learning the Three Layers
Description: This lesson will help students visualize the Earth's crust (lithosphere), mantle, and core. The students will work in groups to research and design a model of the Earth's layers. Some of the types of models include: computer, fruits such as peaches and apples, and Play-Doh.
