Subject: Science (3 - 7), or Technology Education (3 - 8)
Title: Science is a Wonderland
Description: This is an inquiry lesson to teach students critical thinking skills. The student will learn through discovery what inquiry skills are and how they are used. They will learn how scientists use these skills in the scientific method to do investigations. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Subject: Science (4 - 7), or Technology Education (3 - 5)
Title: Is That a Whale?
Description: This lesson will increase student knowledge of whale anatomy and habitat while using the Internet for information gathering.

Subject: Science (7), or Technology Education (6 - 8)
Title: The Tree of Life
Description: This is a lesson to help students understand the phylogeny of organisms and how all organisms are linked in a certain way. By navigating an Internet site, students will learn how organisms are classified.

Subject: Science (7), or Technology Education (6 - 8)
Title: It's a Small, Small World
Description: As an introduction to the study of diversity of life, science students will use hands-on inquiry experiments to discover the microscopic world through a microscope. Students will use computers to create a brochure or slideshow presentation to show the three kinds of protists. Students will learn the importance of all life in our biosphere.

Subject: Science
Title: Birds of Prey      Add Bookmark
Description: In this Science NetLinks lesson, students research several birds of prey and examine predator/prey relationships. The suggested reading and research questions should help students' understanding of these topics move forward, and may lead into a discussion of food chains and webs as well.

Subject: Science, Social Studies
Title: Yellowstone Wolves      Add Bookmark
Description: The purpose of this lesson, from Science NetLinks, is to use the Internet to explore relationships between habitats and species (specifically the gray wolf and those species with which it must coexist) as well as the effect of physical and human forces on living things and their environment. Students focus on the example of the conflict between ranchers and wolves.

Title: Cat's Meow      Add Bookmark
Description: In this Science Update, from Science NetLinks, you'll hear about the theories and mysteries surrounding the purpose and origins of various feline vocalizations. While purring appears to be a common mechanism of communication between cats, meowing may be a behavior geared towards eliciting a desired response from their human masters. Science Updates are audio interviews with scientists and are accompanied by a set of questions as well as links to related Science NetLinks lessons and other related resources.

Title: All Species Inventory      Add Bookmark
Description: In this Science Update, from Science NetLinks, you'll hear an interview with Kevin Kelly, co-founder and board chairman of the All Species Foundation in San Francisco. Kelly discusses his mission to discover, identify, and document every species on Earth within the next 25 years. Students then read more information about the project, and conclude by answering some related questions. Science Updates are audio interviews with scientists and are accompanied by a set of questions as well as links to related Science NetLinks lessons and other related resources.

Subject: Science
Title: Classify That!      Add Bookmark
Description: In this lesson, from Science NetLinks, students get acquainted with diverse forms of life by using modern biological classification systems to group animals that are related. Students learn about basic scientific groupings like genus, species, mammals, fish, birds, amphibians, and reptiles. One of the Web sites featured in this lesson allows them to pair different vertebrate animals and learn more about their common traits. By doing this, students begin to classify organisms in a more sophisticated way.

Title: Crocs, Then and Now      Add Bookmark
Description: This lesson, from Xpeditions, has students investigate the geographical distributions, habitats, and other features of modern crocodilians and the so-called SuperCroc (Sarcosuchus imperator). Students consider the things they can learn about one species by studying the other. They create Venn diagrams to compare and contrast one modern species with SuperCroc. They conclude by writing paragraphs describing this comparison and explaining how each species helps us learn about the other.

Title: Using Venn Diagrams to Compare Two Ecosystems      Add Bookmark
Description: This Xpeditions lesson helps students identify and describe differences between two related ecosystems. Many students believe that the Earth's only rain forests are found in the tropics. On the contrary, temperate rain forests can be found along the coast of North America's Pacific Northwest. These stands are as endangered as and much smaller than their tropical cousins. By acquiring geographic information from a number of sources, and by using that information to complete a Venn diagram, students come to understand the distribution of temperate and tropical rain forests and the unique characteristics of both.
