Title: Wear Your DNA Necklace!
Description: DNA extraction is a necessary and routine step in many biotechnology procedures, such as DNA fingerprinting.  Students will observe the properties of DNA by extracting the molecule from their own cheek cells.  If possible, students should not eat or brush their teeth before this lab. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science University, GEMS-U Project.

Title: Proteome      Add Bookmark
Description: In this Science Update, from science NetLinks, you'll hear about the difficulties of the task of determining which genes make which proteins, and what these proteins do. Geneticists think this information could provide valuable insights into disease. Science Updates are audio interviews with scientists and are accompanied by a set of questions as well as links to related Science NetLinks lessons and other related resources.

Title: Color-Coded DNA      Add Bookmark
Description: In this Science Update, from Science NetLinks, you'll hear about a new way to use DNA to detect infectious diseases. Scientist Bruce Armitage discusses his research with DNA and PNA, a lab-created version of DNA that can be made to seek out and connect to a specific DNA sequence. Science Updates are audio interviews with scientists and are accompanied by a set of questions as well as links to related Science NetLinks lessons and other related resources.
