Title: Mentos, Soda, and Nucleation
Description: In this lesson, Mentos candy and different types of soda are used to show examples of nucleation, surface tension, surface area, polar attractions, and supersaturated materials. A video will be used to show the examples and the students will then work in groups to determine what their hypothesis is about what is happening and why. The students will be given a chance to debate with other students about why their hypothesis is correct. This lesson could be used in eighth grade physical science, physical science, chemistry, and/or physics.

Title: What's the Matter - Concentration Game
Description:   What’s the Matter? is a guided inquiry lesson on classification of matter, physical and chemical properties, and physical and chemical changes.  There are two parts to this lesson: (a) concentration game for definitions and (b) concentration game for matter classification, physical and chemical properties, and physical and chemical changes. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science University, GEMS-U Project.

Title: Which Came First, Ice Cream or Refrigeration?
Description: As students begin their study of states of matter, this hands-on activity demonstrates how the interaction of a solid and a liquid can reverse the initial state of each material.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science University, GEMS-U Project.

Title: Physical and Chemical Changes, A Demonstration
Description: Students will compare and contrast physical and chemical changes. They will view a website describing the components of cosmetics. Students will aid the teacher in preparing a dessert made with physical and chemical changes. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: Discovering Earth's History
Description: This lesson introduces the basic principles that are used to interpret geologic time. It associates the relationships between the rock record and historical events that created the landforms on our planet. It explains how the rock record can be interpreted by geologists.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project, funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: Physical and Chemical Changes
Description: The teacher will conduct the whoosh bottle demonstration to engage students. The class will then begin discussion of endothermic and exothermic physical and chemical changes. The students will then conduct the Science in Motion lab “Simple Distillation”. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Description: In this lesson, one of a multi-part unit from Illuminations, students explore rates of change and accumulation in context. They calculate concentrations and flow rates and use an interactive Java applet to graph their data.

Title: Cold Car Start      Add Bookmark
Description: In this Science Update, from Science NetLinks, you'll hear how wind chill affects car engines. Wind makes the temperature feel colder because it carries heat away from our bodies; it affects car engines in a similar way. Science Updates are audio interviews with scientists and are accompanied by a set of questions as well as links to related Science NetLinks lessons and other related resources.
