ALEX Lesson Plans

Subject: Science (9 - 12)
Title: Rubber Egg Diffusion
Description: This lab will illustrate diffusion and osmosis through a semi-permeable membrane. A chicken egg will be used as the model cell, because the yolk is actually a single large cell. The surrounding egg white, or albumin, contains water and several different proteins.

Subject: Science (9 - 12)
Title: pHun with Acids and Bases!!! (a pH lesson)
Description: In this lesson, the students will learn the characteristics of acids and bases including the associated pH values. The students will conduct a hands-on activity that shows color indicators for different pH values. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Subject: Mathematics (7), or Science (7 - 12), or Technology Education (9 - 12)
Title: How Big Can a Bee Be?
Description: Students will study the relationship between surface area and volume. Math, science, and technology components are included.

Subject: Science
Title: Plasmolysis in Elodea Plant Cells      Add Bookmark
Description: In this Science NetLinks lesson, students microscopically detect the presence of chloroplasts, cell walls and cell membranes of the common aquarium plant, Elodea. Students then determine the effects of different salt solutions on the Elodea plant cell structures.

Title: Drying Dishes      Add Bookmark
Description: In this Science Update, from Science NetLinks, you'll hear how a quirk of dish drying shows off a fundamental idea behind the chemistry of water. Because of their different compositions, plastic takes a lot longer to dry than glass. Science Updates are audio interviews with scientists and are accompanied by a set of questions as well as links to related Science NetLinks lessons and other related resources.

Subject: Health, Science
Title: Acid Stomach      Add Bookmark
Description: This Science NetLinks lesson is intended for a high-school introductory chemistry class or health class. The lesson begins with the reading of an article on the history of the development of aspirin. Students then complete a lab that compares the reaction of regular aspirin, buffered aspirin, and enteric aspirin in neutral, acidic, and basic solutions. They then analyze the results of the experiment to gain insight into how this information was used by researchers to solve some of the problems associated with aspirin. To complete the lesson, students must understand acids and bases.

Subject: Science
Title: From Cell to DNA      Add Bookmark
Description: This tool, created by Science NetLinks, features an animation that takes students through a tour of a typical human cell, moving from larger to smaller cell structures. It briefly describes some of these structures and describes how DNA strands are constructed. While this page links to the overview of the tool for grades 9-12, you can access reviews for additional grades and benchmarks using the navigation tools at the top of the overview.
