ALEX Lesson Plans

Subject: Science (9 - 12)
Title: Pass It Down
Description: This lesson, Pass It Down, integrates science and math into two consecutive hands-on genetics activities that should be embedded within an existing genetics unit suitable for biology students. The results of each activity will be inherently unique, since data generated will be based on genetic traits of students. First, frequency of our class’s facial traits, such as ear lobe attachment, will be calculated. Second, the ability to taste various chemicals, such as PTC, will be tested. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science University, GEMS-U Project.

Subject: Science (9 - 12)
Title: Cats, Dogs, and Dragons. Oh My!
Description: This is a technology-based, hands-on Biology lesson on Heredity and Traits. Students learn about the basics of Heredity through a virtual tour and then work  to create their own dragon based on the inheritance of traits.(Adapted from ASIM).

Subject: Science (9 - 12)
Title: Genetic Disorders Group Activity
Description: In this group activity, students will use the Internet to research genetic disorders. They will choose one and design a pamphlet which outlines background information about the disorder, symptoms of the disorder, state whether or not the disorder is hereditary, discuss possible treatments (if any), and the patient’s prognosis. Each group will present their disease/disorder to the class.

Title: From Cell to DNA      Add Bookmark
Description: This tool, created by Science NetLinks, features an animation that takes students through a tour of a typical human cell, moving from larger to smaller cell structures. It briefly describes some of these structures and describes how DNA strands are constructed. While this page links to the overview of the tool for grades 9-12, you can access reviews for additional grades and benchmarks using the navigation tools at the top of the overview.
