Subject: Science (9 - 12), or Technology Education (9 - 12)
Title: DNA: The Blueprint of Life
Description: This is a technology based, hands-on Biology lesson on the structure and function of DNA. Students learn the basics about DNA through a powerpoint and then complete a virtual lab on extracting DNA from cheek cells.

Subject: Arts Education (7 - 12), or Science (9 - 12)
Title: Protein Synthesis Drama
Description: In this lesson the student will illustrate the creation and copying of the molecular structure of DNA and RNA. They will accomplish this by creating a comic strip and/or storyboard that graphically describes transcription and translation. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Subject: Science (9 - 12), or Technology Education (9 - 12)
Title: Genetic Disorders Research
Description: Students will first discover types of mutations and then research different types of genetic disorders that result from mutations and chromosomal malfunctions. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Subject: Science (9 - 12), or Technology Education (9 - 12)
Title: Cell Division- A WebQuest
Description: In this lesson, students will learn about cell division via the Internet. Students will learn about the stages of mitosis and meiosis. In addition, students will learn about the cell cycle. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project, funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Subject: Science (9 - 12), or Technology Education (9 - 12)
Title: DNA Technology Project
Description: Students will research current uses for DNA technology. Students identify a variety of ways that DNA technology can be used. Finally, the students create a DNA Technology project using technology. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Subject: Science (9 - 12), or Technology Education (9 - 12)
Title: "Dummie's" Guide to PCR
Description: (This lesson is for a more advanced class such as honors or AP Biology.) The lesson will look at one of the most important tools to the molecular biologist, PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction). The students will learn the science behind PCR and the steps scientists go through to do PCR. The students will design a slideshow presentation to explain the science of PCR to others.

Title: From Cell to DNA      Add Bookmark
Description: This tool, created by Science NetLinks, features an animation that takes students through a tour of a typical human cell, moving from larger to smaller cell structures. It briefly describes some of these structures and describes how DNA strands are constructed. While this page links to the overview of the tool for grades 9-12, you can access reviews for additional grades and benchmarks using the navigation tools at the top of the overview.
