Title: What is in a Biome? 
Description: As part of the study of the biosphere, the students will create a lesson and provide a three dimensional model of teacher assigned biome.  In groups students will use lap tops to acquire information about assigned biome.  Groups will then create lesson presentation and a three dimensional model explaining identifying characteristics of assigned biome.

Title:  Terrestrial Biomes of the World
Description: This is a technology-based Biology lesson on the Biomes of the world. Students will work in groups and research an assigned biome. Students will use Photo Story 3 to create a digital presentation of their biome.

Title: Biomes
Description: In this lesson, students research 12 terrestrial and aquatic biomes. A blank biomes chart and website address is provided for the research. For each biome, students should find types of plants, types of animals, and climate. In addition to completing the biomes chart, students are assigned 20 questions pertaining to the biomes. They should find the answers while browsing the website. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project, funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: Endangered Species
Description: Students research and create a brochure project on an endangered species of their choice integrating aspects of math, science, social studies, art, reading and writing. This project allows the students to make connections across the curriculum. Students present their ideas to a group of peers persuading the group to help save or become interested in helping the endangered species. Students are also encouraged to make connections between the activities of the human population and their effect on the natural world. This project may be completed using the media center computers, computer lab, or individual computers as a homework project. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: Diverse Life forms of the Ocean
Description: This lesson allows students to view and draw conclusions on the importance of life in the ocean. It uses student created movies to explore what is going on, as well as identifying the zones and diverse life associated with the oceans. The teacher will be able to facilitate mult-faceted questions concerning the oceans and all the interactions of life within it.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: ABC Book of Fauna
Description: This lesson is to provide students the opportunity to explore the various types of fauna (animals) found in the various biomes throughout the world.

Title: Physical Characteristics of Places: The Fossil Record      Add Bookmark
Description: This Xpeditions lesson asks students to consider how the movement of the Earth's tectonic plates alters the physical characteristics of places over geologic time. They investigate how climate has changed in specific world regions since the time of the dinosaurs and write paragraphs explaining their findings.

Description: This Xpeditions lesson focuses on biomagnification as it relates to the ecosystems of the Great Lakes region in the mid-western United States. As they work through the lesson, students diagram a food chain and label maps to show progress on environmental issues.

Title: Contaminants in the Water Cycle      Add Bookmark
Description: In this Xpeditions lesson, students review the water cycle and investigate how a region's water supply can become contaminated. They look at a list of the Environmental Protection Agency's maximum contaminant levels for drinking water and sketch the water cycle of a fictitious town that is affected by several pollutants. Students conclude by writing paragraphs explaining what a group of concerned citizens in this hypothetical town might do to improve the quality of its water supply.

Title: About a Tree: The Life and Work of Emerging Explorer Mark Olson      Add Bookmark
Description: In this Xpeditions lesson, students learn about National Geographic Emerging Explorer Mark Olson's efforts to identify extinct or nearly extinct plants and the reasons for the plant losses. They consider the issues surrounding conservation efforts in dry tropical regions. Students read articles highlighting the tension between wildlife conservation and agriculture, compare the perspectives of those who are most intensely involved in both, and form an opinion as to what might be done to resolve the conflict. Students research both sides of the issue and write an editorial or letter to Congress supporting their opinion. This lesson is based on the National Geographic news article titled Scaring Up Ghost Plants in Mexico.

Title: Owls: Top of a Food Chain      Add Bookmark
Description: This Science NetLinks lesson serves as proof that owls eat rodents and use this energy to survive. Owls excrete the parts of the rodent that they are unable to digest, leading students to infer that they are recycled in the soil. Using commercial owl pellets, students can try to identify the type of rodent eaten by the owl. Students are capable of creating a food chain based on prior knowledge: Owl-vole-grain or seeds-sun.
