Title: Discovering Earth's History
Description: This lesson introduces the basic principles that are used to interpret geologic time. It associates the relationships between the rock record and historical events that created the landforms on our planet. It explains how the rock record can be interpreted by geologists.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project, funded by the Malone Family Foundation.


Subject: Science (9 - 12), or Technology Education (9 - 12)
Title: Biomes
Description: In this lesson, students research 12 terrestrial and aquatic biomes. A blank biomes chart and website address is provided for the research. For each biome, students should find types of plants, types of animals, and climate. In addition to completing the biomes chart, students are assigned 20 questions pertaining to the biomes. They should find the answers while browsing the website. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project, funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Description: In this Xpeditions lesson, students investigate three broad ocean habitats--the intertidal zone, the pelagic zone (open ocean), and the abyss--and find out about some specific adaptations animals have made in each of these regions. They conduct Internet research and answer questions about what they find, and conclude by writing paragraphs describing what would happen if marine animals were placed in the wrong levels of the ocean.

Description: In this Xpeditions lesson, students learn about the ways National Geographic Emerging Explorer Tyrone Hayes uses a combination of laboratory and field study to learn about changes in frogs appearances as they relate to chemical contamination of water. Students choose to investigate one of three topics on which frog studies are helping to provide information--pesticide use, cancer, or cryopreservation.
