ALEX Lesson Plans
Subject: Science (9 - 12), or Technology Education (9 - 12) Title: The Tragedy of the Commons
Description: Tragedy of the Commons is the mind set: "If I don't use the resources then someone else will." This is a simulation that allows students to explore how the common usage of a potentially renewable resource can lead to its exploitation. Students will complete an activity, a data sheet, an analysis of the data, and a comparison of this problem to a local environmental issue. Students will pose solutions to this problem. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project, funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Add Bookmark
Description: This Xpeditions lesson introduces students to the challenge of maintaining balance among the '' '' competing'' '' species that coexist on public lands. Students discuss how the wild ponies of Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge have adapted to their environment. Students also have to discern the challenges faced by land management teams that handle these pony herds and then create a plan for balancing the needs of the ponies with those of other inhabitants. Add Bookmark
Description: In this Xpeditions lesson, students research, discuss, and write reports on the relationship between climate and agriculture. They pretend that they've just purchased farms in specific parts of the United States and investigate that region's weather and climate in order to maximize the chances that their farms succeed.
