Title: Hey!  I'm Talking To You!!
Description: Effective communication skills are a key component for successful self-advocacy, empowerment and leadership.  This lesson will teach high school students the types of communication, how to understand one's audience, and ways to utilize appropriate tone, timing and words.  The goal is for students to apply use of communication skills, so the lesson will incorporate role playing exercises for various settings.


Subject: Counseling and Guidance (K - 12)
Title: Common App - Planning to Apply for College Admission
Description: This lesson is designed for high school students who are planning to apply for college admission.  Particularly useful for freshmen and sophomores, viewing the Common App early in high school will help students know how to prepare to complete a college application as a senior.  The Common App is a college application a student can complete and send to numerous colleges simultaneously.  Examining the Common App will help students become aware of the importance of maintaining a solid GPA and class rank, performing well on standardized admission exams, and getting involved in extracurricular activities.


Subject: Counseling and Guidance (K - 12)
Title: You Can Do It!
Description: A great pep talk, this lesson will provide motivation and inspiration to students through a web-based video and group reflection time.  Students will discuss obstacles to reaching goals and ways in which to overcome those obstacles.  This brief lesson is rich with opportunity for a counselor or teacher to encourage high school students students.  Using this lesson when semester exams or other stressful times are approaching would be a good idea!

Title: The One-Minute Praise
Description: The lesson will show the importance of positive stroking (feedback) for behavior modification. Dr. Ken Blanchard (The One Minute Manager)suggests we "catch people doing something right." To quote Lord Chesterfield's advice: "Make a person like himself/herself a little better and I promise he/she will like you very well indeed."

Title: I’m "Thumbody"
Description: Through the activity of making a thumb print and drawing a picture of themselves around it, students will identify differences between themselves and others in the class.

Title: What Can I Do?      Add Bookmark
Description: The main goals of this Science NetLinks lesson are to help students identify their feelings, learn how to tell others about their feelings, and learn how this emotional knowledge can help them resolve conflict. The premise of this lesson is that students who learn how to communicate about how they are feeling will be more likely to use communication as a method for resolving conflict.
