Title: What a Character!
Description: Kindergarten students will learn what a character is.  Students will create characters using feelings, actions, and behavior. They will portray their characters and explain the choices they made to develop them.

Title: Who's At The Zoo? Mammals, Reptiles, and Birds!
Description: In this week-long language development unit, Kindergarten English Language Learners will learn to identify science facts in nonfiction books. Students will sort zoo animals into mammals, reptiles, and birds. They will practice listening for facts and writing what they learn. The lesson format follows the Sheltered English Observation Protocol (SIOP).

Title: Fun with Seasons!
Description: In this lesson students will learn about proper sequencing of events while also learning about our four seasons. We will be reading the book, The Apple Pie Tree and will be discussing each season prior to our reading. The students will give examples of each season and the types of clothing they wear or activities they do during each season. After reading the book students will complete a project where they will "dress" their stick figures on construction paper with the proper clothing in each season and will sequence these in the correct order.

Title: Making Measuring Meaningful!
Description: This activity helps students recognize that measuring tools can come in many different shapes and sizes. The student's will develop creative-thinking, math, and social skills as they use nontraditional and traditional measuring tools. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science University, GEMS-U Project.

Title: What Can Shapes Be....
Description: This is a hands-on lesson that will help students explore shapes in their environment. Students will work in diverse groups to complete this activity. Students will make a class book of their findings.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science University, GEMS-U Project.

Title: The Shape of Things!
Description: With this lesson, students will recognize and use the 4 basic shapes to create objects that they find in their enviornment.  The students will then use their "shape creation" and recreate it on the computer.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science University, GEMS-U Project.

Title: The Very Hungry Class
Description: Eric Carle's "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" is a great trade book to teach many concepts across the curriculum. This lesson has activities to excite your students in all subject areas. Students will be familiar with the metamorphsis process and will enrich skills in other curriculium areas.

Title: Phonological Awareness/Rhyming
Description: During this lesson students will be introduced to rhyme in a variety of ways. Students will use picture cards, practice rhyming on the Internet, and listen to a book with rhyme. At the end of the lesson, student should be able to recognize rhyming words.

Title: Cookies and Rhyme
Description: This lesson will help students reinforce reading readiness skills (rhyming) with a chant and activities. After reading the story,Who Took The Cookies From The Cookie Jar, the students will recite the word that rhymes with a word from the line in the story. A puppet activity and Internet games will reinforce rhyming skills.

Title: Celebrating Seuss!
Description: In honor of Dr. Seuss's birthday students will explore and develop a love of the literature of Dr. Seuss through read-alouds and activities such as a birthday party, rhyming word matching, and graphing.

Title: Cooking Experience with Blueberries For Sal
Description: This lesson will enhance the study of the color blue by providing a story, cooking experience and writing activity.

Title: What Can We Learn From Pigs?
Description: This thematic language arts lesson uses a variety of beginning reading books about pigs to help special education/early elementary students learn about character traits and concepts. The wide use of graphic organizers introduces beginning readers to early reading strategies.

Title: There's Magic In Green Eggs and Ham
Description: As a part of a unit about Dr. Suess, students will learn about sequential order. Student understanding will be aided by the use of hands-on preparation of green eggs and ham, dictation, flannel board, sentence strips, and a living center.

After locating the earth's major oceans on a world map, students dive underwater to discover the plants and animals that live in the sea. They can add their own artwork and text about ocean animals and plants to a cut-away ocean display. Finally, students engage in various forms of creative writing about the ocean and ocean life.
