Title: Guess My Shape
Description: The students will make the connection between 2-D and 3-D shapes using modeling clay and geometric solids and participate in an interactive web lesson. Students will make predictions about what 2-D shape they think will be made when they press 3-D solids into modeling clay. They will then check their predictions. This lesson plan was created by exemplary Alabama Math Teachers through the AMSTI project.

Title: Who's Line Is It Anyway? 
Description: In this lesson students will learn about line of symmetry in real life objects. An interactive web lesson is used to engage students and give a multitude of real life examples with some interactive practice. The lesson also includes an art activity in the extension. This lesson plan was created by exemplary Alabama Math Teachers through the AMSTI project.

Title: I Want My Half- An Interactive Lesson Introducing Fractions
Description: In this lesson, the children will identify parts of a whole using modeling clay, participate in an interactive web lesson, participate in an interactive web game, and construct a fraction poster. The activities are used as instructional plans to help students better understand shapes and parts of a shape up to a whole. This lesson plan was created by exemplary Alabama Math Teachers through the AMSTI project.

Title: "Triangles and Things"
Description: The Greedy Triangle, a Marilyn Burns book, will assist students in determining the simple relationships among polygons. With a wish, the Greedy Triangle is transformed into various polygons. With the addition of a side and an angle, students will be able to determine the difference among triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, and hexagon. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: WANTED: A Few Of Our Favorite Authors
Description: This unit is designed to spotlight the work of one children's author each month. Students explore the life and writing styles of each author studied, as well as incorporating studies of story elements in the various works.

Title: Pass the Punctuation, Please!
Description: During this lesson students will listen to the story, Noisy Nora by Rosemary Wells and identify punctuation used in the story. Students will also play games to strengthen knowledge of punctuation usage. They will then use the Internet to practice what they learn during this lesson.

Title: Edible Edits
Description: During this lesson students will listen to the story Max's Wacky Taxi Day by Max Grover and edit capitalization and punctuation taken from the story. The students will have the opportunity to practice their new skills by working on the Internet.

Title: Changing "Now" Words to "Then" Words
Description: This interdisciplinary lesson teaches first graders to use the inflectional ending -ed to create past tense verbs from present tense verbs. As children learn to use the -ed pattern, they change familiar root words into longer words to denote past time. These words are recognized in reading comprehension as past time, in personal writing, and spelling with the -ed ending.

Title: Compound Words
Description: In this lesson the students will be introduced to compound words through the use of a multimedia presentation. Students will then form compound words through the use of teacher-made puzzles. Finally, the students will participate in a game in which they "catch" compound words projected from an overhead projector by using strips of white poster paper.

Title: Easter Egg Eggstravaganza
Description: Computer and language arts skills will be introduced, reinforced and enriched through Easter activities related to the book The Golden Egg by A.J. Wood.

Title: The Four Seasons
Description: This is a reading and writing lesson for special education/early elementary about the four seasons.

Title: Compound Words
Description: Students will listen to the story Once There Was A Bull... (frog) and identify the compound words in the story, then work with a partner to think of additional examples of compound words.

Title: Those Fussy Dinosaurs!      Add Bookmark
Description: In this lesson, from Xpeditions, students discuss the idea that animals prefer certain types of habitats over others and, in fact, cannot live in places that are too different from what they prefer. In this case, they focus on dinosaurs. They learn about the types of habitats and climates scientists believe dinosaurs tended to prefer and conclude by drawing background scenes to use in a toy dinosaur's home.

Description: In this two-lesson unit, from EDSITEment, students become familiar with fables and trickster tales from different cultural traditions. They explore how folktales employ animals in different ways to portray human strengths and weaknesses and how this wisdom is passed down from one generation to the next. These lessons introduce students to the world of folklore and explore how folktales convey the perspectives of world cultures.
