Title: The Very Busy Students: Writing with Eric Carle
Description: In this interdisciplinary unit addressing science and language arts standards, English Language Learners will learn the life cycle of insects. They will also use the writing of a renowned children's author, Eric Carle, as a model for their own writing. During the final project of the lesson, students will follow the writing process. The lesson format follows the Sheltered English Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP).

Title: How Fast Can You Go?
Description: Students will experience force and speed by constructing model cars in cooperative groups.  The students will explore ways to move their cars at different speeds.  Each group will do a PhotoStory describing their cars.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science University, GEMS-U Project.

Title: Telling Time to the Hour
Description: This lesson helps children make a connection between the digital and analog clock. In general, the number system is based on units of ten which can sometimes make it difficult for children to realize that time is based on cycles of 60.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: Mr. Crocodile's Busy Day
Description: Students will listen to the book What Time is it Mr. Crocodile? by Judy Sierra. The students will read and use Mr. Crocodile’s schedule to answer questions as well as read analog and digital clocks to the hour.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: Learning to Clean Tables by Using Sign Language/Picture Symbols
Description: This is a L.I.F.E Skills functional and reading lesson using sign language and picture symbols for a severe/profound class with little or no verbal expressive language skills.

Title: The Napping House
Description: During this lesson, children "wonder" when interacting with text. Instead of predicting what comes next in the story, students use their imaginations to wonder about what might happen. They create their own wondering multimedia slide about a new text. This is a great way to encourage creativity.

Title: Beanie Baby Habitats Collaborative Project
Description: With the booming market of "Beanie Baby" type stuffed animals being so prominent in students' lives, this project brings that interest into the classroom through the use of research, science, hands-on experiences, and technology. The project includes research of living things and habitats through various resources including textbookss, trade books, encyclopedias, and the Internet. It also includes a hands-on project where students design and create a habitat for a chosen living thing. Students will work collaboratively in the classroom and use communication skills to share information with another classroom using distance learning capabilities throughout the project.

Title: Inch by Inch Learning Is a Cinch
Description: This lesson uses an interdisciplinary approach involving literature, math, and writing. Using the book, Inch by Inch, by Leo Lionni students will explore the world of measurement. They will have the opportunity to practice measuring objects with inchworms like in the book. They will also have a chance to use creative thinking to write their own stories.

Title: Pass the Punctuation, Please!
Description: During this lesson students will listen to the story, Noisy Nora by Rosemary Wells and identify punctuation used in the story. Students will also play games to strengthen knowledge of punctuation usage. They will then use the Internet to practice what they learn during this lesson.

Title: Nifty Nouns
Description: This lesson will introduce students to nouns. Students will practice identifying nouns in a book and on the Internet. A noun quilt will be created at the end of the lesson to demonstrate students' understanding of nouns.

Title: Edible Edits
Description: During this lesson students will listen to the story Max's Wacky Taxi Day by Max Grover and edit capitalization and punctuation taken from the story. The students will have the opportunity to practice their new skills by working on the Internet.

Title: The Very Quiet Cricket
Description: During this lesson, students will write a sequel to The Very Quiet Cricket. The students will discuss and demonstrate the use of personification in the story. The class will also complete a WebQuest about The Very Quiet Cricket.

Title: African Internet Safari
Description: During this lesson, students read and listen to poems about African animals and try to guess which animal is being described. Students will use the information they already know to identify the animals. Students will have the opportunity to write a mystery poem about an animal. They will get to share their poems and have the class guess the animal.

Title: What Can We Learn From Pigs?
Description: This thematic language arts lesson uses a variety of beginning reading books about pigs to help special education/early elementary students learn about character traits and concepts. The wide use of graphic organizers introduces beginning readers to early reading strategies.

Description: This lesson will be implemented as part of a unit about plants. The students will describe the characteristics of a peanut and peanut butter (using their five senses) and record their observations/descriptions on a graphic organizer. Student understanding will be enhanced with the use of books, class discussions, and the Internet.

Description: As a part of a week-long unit about bats, the students will identify the characteristics of a bat and organize the facts using Think-sheets. Student understanding will be enhanced with the use of books, poems, lectures, discussions, individual booklets, and the Internet.

Title: "Batty" About Bats!! (Writing)
Description: As a part of a week-long unit about bats, the students will identify the characteristics of a bat and write an essay about bats. Student understanding will be enhanced through the use of books, poems, lectures, discussions, individual “flip books”, an art project, and the Internet.

Title: "Nuts" About Peanuts! (Reading)
Description: The lesson will be implemented as part of a unit about plants. The students will learn about the growth cycle of a peanut and use a Five-Step Sequence Think-sheet to sequence the steps. They will also make predictions and complete activities to check their predictions/draw conclusions (including math skills of graphing and comparing). Student understanding will be enhanced with the use of books, class discussions, and the Internet.

Description: Students will use Leo Lionni’s literature and his website to learn about the author, mix primary colors, summarize and rewrite a story, and use graphing skills to determine the classes’ favorite color.

Title: Word a Day
Description: Word a Day allows students to develop a bank of sight words that are meaningful to them. Each student picks words to add to his/her individual word bank. The teacher can specify particular categories or let the student choose any word. The student then finds a picture or symbol to illustrate each word using a variety of resources.

Title: Getting to Know You
Description: The students will go on an in-school scavenger hunt to get to know the many kinds of people that make up an elementary school community. They will work in small groups and use digital cameras to take pictures of the workers they find. By completing the scavenger hunt, the students will gain a better understanding of how we are all dependent on one another in a small community.
