Title: The Biography Project: Exploring the Past in 21st Century Ways
Description: Through this project-based lesson, students will do research on and create an oral presentation based on the life of an influential Famous American. Students will utilize various means to glean information, from online databases, various websites, and age-appropriate biographical literature to prepare for the final product: a "Living Wax Museum." Students will determine the most relevant information to write a script presented in the form of an oral presentation. The presentations will also be recorded and published as a podcast for sharing on the teacher's website.

Title: A Journey Through the Trees
Description: The teacher will discuss the importance of trees with the students. The teacher will provide photographs of various trees that grow in Russell Cave National Monument and the surrounding North Alabama area. The teacher will discuss significant features of each tree and pertinent ways to identify them. The collection may include: Dogwood, various Oak, Hickory, Pine, Maple, Cedar, Beech, Elm, and Birch trees. The teacher will take a nature walk with the students in order for each child to choose a tree and do a bark rub. The students will compare their art and write a journal entry in order to describe something they learned about their particular tree. This lesson plan is made possible through the ALEX and the U.S. National Park Service Partnership.

Title: On the Farm with Wilbur and Charlotte
Description: During this unit, students will explore many aspects of the book Charlotte's Web. Students will work as a group to develop a presentation, design a web page, and prepare a newsletter. They will also complete a WebQuest about Charlotte's Web and study farm animals.

Title: Identifying and Using Action Verbs
Description: It is important to know how to use verbs correctly. This lesson will demonstrate how to use action verbs. Students will visit Internet sites to learn more about action verbs. They will have the opportunity to use newly-learned action verbs to write a story and act it out.

Title: Traditions At Home and Around the World
Description: Each student will research his/her own family traditions and report findings to the class using presentation software. In partner groups, students will select a country to research. Their research will focus on traditions of a chosen country and will be compiled in brochure format.

Title: Publishing a Book Report Using Word Processing
Description: This lesson provides students with the basic steps to using word processing. Students will use word processing software to publish a final copy of a book report. Students will review the main parts of a book report. This lesson will teach students technology skills they will use throughout their school career.

Title: Luscious Layers of Life...A Walk Through the Rainforest
Description: This lesson provides students with an opportunity to learn about the animals and plant life that live in the various layers of the tropical rainforest. Students will view a slideshow with many different facts and pictures of the rainforest. They will also research animals and plants of the rainforest by searching Internet sites. Students will also share what they learn through an typed report.

Title: Ants on a Log--A Language Experience Story
Description: This lesson will allow students to create a snack using celery, peanut butter, and raisins (called "Ants on a Log"). Then the students will write about the experience using transitional words. The teacher can adapt the lesson to any mode of writing desired.

Title: Persuasive Writing with Second Graders
Description: During this lesson students will search a piece of persuasive writing to find details supporting their position. They will participate in a group activity involving brainstorming and writing a persuasive letter, and will then complete their own individual piece of persuasive writing.

Title: Email Pals
Description: The students will participate in an Internet pen pals exchange. They will exchange email with students in other parts of the United States or in other countries. They will learn about the culture and climate in other states and countries through participating in this activity.

Title: Spine Labels - What are they and why are they there?
Description: This is a first or second grade library skills unit, conducted by the librarian with help from the art, computer, and homeroom teachers. Students will create: their own book cover and title page containing title, author & slideshow template; and one part of a class web page. It is possible to use only certain parts of this unit as a stand-alone lesson for use in the library, however, standards addressed assume completion of entire unit.

Title: Habitats
Description: What is a habitat? In this lesson, students will identify that a habitat has four elements, food, water, shelter, and space. Students will identify their own habitat and create a brochure describing the habitat in terms of food, water, shelter, and space. They will work in cooperative groups to create a multimedia presentation describing the food, water, shelter, and space needs of one animal.

Title: Decisions, Decisions, Decisions!
Description: Students will read and discuss the story, Ira Sleeps Over, by Bernard Waber and write a persuasive paragraph about the story, using a Think-sheet to guide the writing.

Title: Glorious Sunflowers
Description: In this lesson students will identify, measure and graph seeds and other characteristics of sunflowers and write descriptive and narrative paragraphs about sunflowers.

Title: Action Verbs
Description: Students will use handheld computers and the Sketchy program to illustrate action verbs.

Title: Sounds: What We Hear!
Description: Students will create a descriptive writing about the sounds they hear in a favorite place. This is a good follow-up to a science unit on sound.

Title: Nouns, Verbs, and Describing Words
Description: This language arts lesson uses technology to assess students' understanding of nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Each student will use a digital camera to take a picture at school. He will then write a descriptive sentence about the picture using a word processor. Students will use a specified colored font to identify the nouns, verbs, and adjectives in the sentence.

Title: Money Management
Description: This month-long experience educates students in differentiating between needs and wants, how to budget resources, and to gain an understanding of the workings of a capitalist society.

Description: Students will create a classroom resource book for substitutes to help them feel more comfortable and familiar with faces and procedures in our classroom and school.

Title: Transformation Creations
Description: The students will use critical thinking skills and artistic abilities to "transform" an image into something completely different. The original images can be taken with a digital camera and printed out or cut from old magazines.

Title: Monster Descriptions
Description: The class will participate in an Internet project called Monster Exchange. They will partner with another class to exchange directions on drawing a monster. They will then share the monsters drawn from the directions by posting them on the Monster Exchange website.
