Subject: English Language Arts (4 - 6), or Social Studies (3 - 5)
Title: Living in the Wild
Description: In this lesson, students will compare and contrast how the Prehistoric Americans lived off the land at Russell Cave and how Sam Gribley from "My Side of the Mountain" lived off the land. This lesson plan is made possible through the ALEX and the U.S. National Park Service Partnership.

Title: Venomous Snakes of Little River Canyon National Preserve
Description: There are three known venomous snakes found at Little River Canyon. They include the timber rattlesnake, copperhead, and cottonmouth.

Title: Edible Cell
Description: As part of the study on Life Processes, the students will watch a video clip at Cells Alive to see a model of the cell and its componenets. The students will use edible products to create an animal cell. Each product will represent a component of the cell. This will be done whole group.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: Teaching Measurement through Literature and Manipulatives
Description: The tradebook, Who Sank the Boat? by Pamela Allen, is an excellent tool in teaching measurement. Students will engage in activities involving different types of measurement. In the story, five animal friends decide to take a boat ride. As each animal climbs into the boat it sinks lower and lower in the water. The phrase, "Do you know who sank the boat?" encourages children to make predictions.

Title: It Happened to Me: Eruption of Mount St. Helens
Description: During this lesson, students navigate different websites to become familiar with volcanoes. Students then describe a volcanic eruption by creating their own stories about what it was like during the eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980.

Title: What Do You See When You Look in the Mirror? Examining Character Motivation
Description: During this unit, students will ask “Why do we do what we do?” They will read different novels to analyze character motivation. Throughout the unit they will debate whether they think characters made smart choices and why. They will also become more familiar with story elements.

Title: Helen Who?
Description: In this lesson, students will be introduced to the contributions of Helen Keller. The students will learn about Helen Keller through research on the Internet, a book, and a role-playing exercise.

Title: Rabbit Tales
Description: During this lesson students will be exposed to different types of writing. Students will have the opportunity to create their own story based on the characteristics of the literature they have read. Students will also learn the history of trickster tales and their significance.

Title: Building Word Castles
Description: In this lesson, students will explore unfamiliar words found in various picture books by Patricia Polacco. Students will discover the meanings of unfamiliar words by using a dictionary and find synonyms and antonyms with a thesarus. The main goal of this lesson is to build vocabulary.


Subject: English Language Arts (4)
Title: Can you solve the problem?
Description: During this lesson, students will analyze ways in which the character(s) in stories solve problems encountered. Students will brainstorm in small groups possible solutions to realistic problems in order to enhance connections to problems found in literature. Students will then explore problems/solutions in a selection of picture books.

Title: Text-to-Self and Text-to-World Connections in Reading
Description: Students will further their reading comprehension by associating real-life events with the events of a story.

Description: Students analyze a photograph, brainstorm words to describe the characters' senses and feelings, work in pairs to describe a character's experience, and create a poem using their ideas and similes.

Description: Based on the Guided Comprehension Model by Maureen McLaughlin and Mary Beth Allen, this lesson helps students learn three types of connections (text-to-text, text-to-self, and text-to-world) using a double-entry journal.
