Title: J. Alfred Hyperbolizes
Description: The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock contains a touch of hyperbole...to say the least, as well as imagery. This fun project based activity will allow students to engage in the lighter side of figurative language.

Title: Plath, Personification, and Figurative Language
Description: This project based activity will use Sylvia Plath's poem, Mirror, to examine the use of personification and figurative language. The activity may also incorporate the use of technology to produce a multimedia project. This allows collaboration with the Business Tech/Multimedia Publication instructor.

Title: Personification with "Grass" by Carl Sandburg
Description: Students will be reading the poem "Grass" and identify the main idea and supporting details with a partner.  Students will then write a poem using personification.

Title: Digital Scrapbook: Symbols and Setting in The Scarlet Letter
Description: Students will be given a list of symbols from the novel and then be asked to photograph images they think represent those symbols.

Title: Literary Graffiti with poetry
Description: Students will read and analyze a poem by creating Literary Graffiti in cooperative learning groups.

Title: Reader's Theater with "Death of the Hired Man" by Robert Frost
Description: Students will read the poem "Death of the Hired Man" in cooperative learning groups using Reader's Theater to obtain a better understanding of the author's use of characterization through dialogue.

Title: Character Metaphors - The Great Gatsby
Description: The students will explore characters by creating metaphors with pictures.  Using a gingerbread styled template and pictures collected from magazines, clip art, or other sources, the students will paste pictures which represent specific qualities of a character.  Students should explain how each picture is a metaphor for a character, and why the picture is pasted in the that particular area of the body.

The goals of this lesson are to learn about the role spirituals have played in African American history and religion, to examine Harriet Tubman's use of spirituals in her work for the Underground Railroad, to explore the continuing power of the spiritual in the Civil Rights Movement and as a shared American heritage, and to gain experience in working with oral tradition; biography; and song as types of historical evidence.

Description: This lesson, from EDSITEment, contains three activities which use the Japanese poetic form of the tanka as a prompt for students to reflect on the nature and purpose of different poetic rules and devices. The activities involve a close study of the conventions and thematic concerns of tanka poems, opportunities for students to compose their own poems, and detailed structural analysis of selected tanka.

Description: This lesson, from EDSITEment, introduces students to the formal terms used to describe sonnets. The central focus throughout is on learning to appreciate the sounds of poetry. By focusing on the sounds of poetry, the lesson seeks to demonstrate that there is an underlying sense of form or structure at work in language, whether we happen to know the names for the formal elements of poetry or not. Included in the lesson are seven sound experiments, designed to help students understand how form, meter, and rhythm all combine to shape our experience of poetry and the meanings we derive from it.
