Description: The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock contains a touch of hyperbole...to say the least, as well as imagery. This fun project based activity will allow students to engage in the lighter side of figurative language.

Title: Plath, Personification, and Figurative Language
Description: This project based activity will use Sylvia Plath's poem, Mirror, to examine the use of personification and figurative language. The activity may also incorporate the use of technology to produce a multimedia project. This allows collaboration with the Business Tech/Multimedia Publication instructor.

Title: Folklore in Zora Neale Hurston's ''Their Eyes Were Watching God''

Description: Students explore the way African-American author Zora Neale Hurston makes use of closely observed black folk life in her novel Their Eyes Were Watching God. Students read the novel, research Hurston's own life and ethnography, listen to her WPA recordings of folksongs and folktales, and compare transcribed folk narrative texts with the novel itself.

Description: In this lesson, one of a multi-part unit from EDSITEment, students explore different components of Dickinson's poetry and then practice their own critical and poetry writing skills in an emulation exercise. Finally, in the spirit of Dickinson's correspondences, students exchange their poems and offer informed critiques of each others work.
