Title:  Sequence Flower Reports
Description: This is a hands-on book report project. It will be an extension activity that occurs after the reading of the stories The Secret Gardens and/or The Gardener. Paper flowers will be designed and put together by each student. Story events will be composed on the flowers parts.

Title: Creating a Prehistoric World
Description: In the lesson, students will research, create, and present knowledge gained about Prehistoric and Historic Native Americans in Alabama. This lesson plan is made possible through the ALEX and the U.S. National Park Service Partnership.


Subject: Arts Education (3 - 5), or English Language Arts (3), or Technology Education (3 - 5)
Title: Carle's Crazy Critters
Description: This lesson provides students with the opportunity to read books aloud to the class. Students also spend time researching Eric Carle and his practices as a writer and illustrator. Finally, students become writers and illustrators themselves, as they create their own books and present their books to younger students.

Title: Animal Environment and Adaptation
Description: In this lesson students will enjoy different activities focusing on how animals adapt to their environments. They will begin by researching two animals, their environment, and the ways the animals adapt to this environment. In small groups students will invent a new animal, including its environment and adaptations. Using presentation software, students will introduce their new animals to the class.

Title: Roman Arches
Description: Students will watch a slideshow presentation on Roman arches with followup discussions and activities focusing on the arch as it is used in architecture and art images. They will then create a collograph using an arch.

Title: Teaching Art with Picture Books
Description: In this lesson, students will observe the work of artist Eric Carle, investigate the life of an illustrator, and make their own three-dimensional art project using tissue paper and paint.


Subject: Arts Education (4), or Technology Education (3 - 5)
Title: The Art of Rene Magritte
Description: This unit is about the artist, Rene Magritte. Students engage in hands-on research in various areas of art utilizing images, software, and Internet resources. Students will then create their own image, and work in groups to create a slideshow presentation on Magritte.


Subject: Arts Education (4), or Mathematics (5)
Title: The Great Divide--A Lesson in Symmetry
Description: This is a whole group, hands-on, fun lesson where students will use knowledge of symmetry to produce art work.
