Title: Photography: Past to Present  
Description: This lesson is part of a Photography Unit for eighth graders. After learning about the history of photography, the goal is to combine older photography processes with new digital processes. Students will make their own pinhole cameras, take pictures with them and develop their negative images in the darkroom. From there, students will use scanners and computers to invert their negative images into positives and create a digital image, manipulating the new image using image software.

Title: Me in 3
Description: Students will select three forms or objects that represent who they are or their major interests. They will get photo references of the items and create fimo sculptures that will be combined into a unified work of art. Students will use complementary colors for objects to create intensity and interest.

Title: Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table
Description: Students will learn basic information on a specific element found on the Periodic Table. Students will produce a reference book appropriate for a third or fourth grade child on the topic of the element the student is assigned. The book will include all of the basic information about the element while making the elements appeal to a young audience.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: Inventions Using Simple Machines Project
Description: Students will have completed a unit on the six simple machines (lever, inclined plane, pulley, wedge, screw, and wheel and axle) before beginning this project. Students will choose to investigate an invention composed of one or more simple machines that has already been invented, or they will choose to build a device composed of one or more simple machines. The invention must be safe to operate and it should be one that can be demonstrated at school. It should be one that students use themselves in everyday life. It should not be complicated.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: Building a Paper Airplane using Bernoulli's Principle
Description: This is a culmination activity used after students have studied Bernoulli's Principle as part of a unit on forces and fluids. Students will use the Internet, textbooks, library resources and their cooperative learning group to design three paper airplanes using a sheet of 8 1/2 inch X 11 inch recycled copy paper and four inches of tape. The cooperative group whose plane had the longest flight in the air will get the most points.This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project funded by the Malone Family Foundation.

Title: If Earth No Longer Existed. . .
Description: Students will work in cooperative groups to research characteristics of each of the planets in our solar system. Students will design a travel brochure outlining the characteristics of each planet. Each group will make an oral presentation on their brochure.

Title: Advertising: What Sells?
Description: This unit encourages students to become aware of the nature and amount of advertising that surrounds them every day, the kinds of visuals used in advertising, and the impact of those visuals. The unit includes an optional virtual field trip to the Museum of Television and Radio.

Title: Perfect Perception? (Perception and Illusion)
Description: Students are introduced to perception puzzles to encourage discovery of symmetry, eye and mind connection, and manipulation of perception. This lesson could be a springboard to lessons in art, math, and science. Included are websites that will be useful to both the student and the teacher.

Title: Brian's Winter by Gary Paulson: Using Art to Study Plot
Description: In this interdisciplinary lesson, students examine the artwork in Lasceaux Cave in France via Internet and illustrate a chapter summary from Brian's Winter by Gary Paulson in "caveman style."

Title: This Business Called Learning: Advertising
Description: After analyzing the techniques of propaganda in commercial advertising, students work in cooperative "business" groups to create an advertising campaign for a new product called Giggle Gum. Campaigns include a press release, slideshow presentation, print ad, and radio commercial.

Title: Oral Presentations on French Impressionism
Description: Students research and present an artist from the period of French Impressionism. Presentations include a biography and examples of the artist's work. After the presentations, students produce sidewalk chalk paintings.

Title: Back in Time: Hieroglyphics in Ancient Egypt
Description: There are over 500 ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics. Students will use the Internet to translate their names into hieroglyphs. They will use the translation to design a clay cartouche.

Title: What's in Your Secret Garden?
Description: After reading F.H. Burnett's The Secret Garden, students create their own secret gardens and design a slideshow presentation of their gardens to share with the class.

Title: Illustrate a Song
Description: Many times when people think of art, they only think about the visual arts. Music is also an art form. Music has the ability to inspire us, change our mood, comfort us, and teach us. It is hard to imagine a day without any sort of music. Therefore, it is necessary that when teaching the arts, students also learn about the value of music as an art form.

Title: Childhood Through the Looking-Glass      Add Bookmark
Description: This lesson from EDSITEment explores the vision of childhood created by Lewis Carroll in Alice in Wonderland. Students begin by looking at Carroll's photographs of the real Alice for whom Carroll imagined his story and compare the image of childhood that he captured on film with images of children in our culture. Then students read Alice in Wonderland with special attention to the illustrations that Carroll made for his book, and explore the relationship between words and pictures by creating an Alice illustration of their own. Next, for contrast, students compare Carroll's vision of childhood with that presented by the Romantic poet William Blake in his illuminated Songs of Innocence and Experience. Finally, students consider the interplay of image and text in their own favorite children's literature and how the vision of childhood presented there compares to their experiences as children. Several pieces of literature appropriate for use with this lesson are suggested.
